Chicago news conference: Andy Martin says the State of Illinois, Cook County and Chicago should file for bankruptcy relief

Andy Martin, America’s leading independent conservative writer and Internet Powerhouse, will hold a Chicago news conference today, December 26th to urge the Illinois General Assembly to authorize bankruptcy court filings by Illinois pension plans, Cook County and the City of Chicago. Andy says the State of Illinois should also waive sovereign immunity and seek bankruptcy protection. Andy, an economist, predicted in 2005 General Motors should file for bankruptcy; GM did so in 2009 with bailout assistance. Andy says that Illinois state-related bankruptcies are inevitable. He now resides in New Hampshire.

ATTENTION NATIONAL AND ILLINOIS DAYBOOK/ASSIGNMENT EDITORS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Maverick Republican Andy Martin says Illinois state agencies and pension plans should immediately file for bankruptcy

The conservative blogger and Internet Powerhouse says that delaying the inevitable is making matters worse for the economic future of Illinois

Andy urged general Motors to file for bankruptcy protection in 2005; GM ultimately did so in 2009

Andy says there will be no federal bailout of Illinois’ profligate state and local governments

Andy says that Illinois politicians have devastated the state’s economic future and lied to current and future retirees

Andy says a bankruptcy reorganization plan should bar multiple pensions, pension enhancements and gimmicks, and ‘pension kings” such as former Governor James Edger who is drawing hundreds thousands of dollars in annual pension cash

Andy says Illinois should establish 401 (k)-style pension plans at every level of government, so employees receive a fair return on what they invest and so that going forward they actually own their own pension funds

(MANCHESTER, NH) (December 26, 2012) Republican activist and Conservative blogger Andy Martin will hold a Chicago, Illinois news conference today, December 26th to call on the Illinois General Assembly to authorize bankruptcy court filings by Illinois pension plans, Cook County and the City of Chicago.

Andy says the state government should also waive its constitutional sovereign immunity so that the state itself can also seek bankruptcy potation.

Andy says that if Illinois politicians are waiting for a bailout from Washington, they are dreaming. Profligate states are going to have to resolve their own pension and spending excesses without federal assistance.

"When I went to the Illinois General Assembly as an intern in 1965 Illinois was a wealthy state,” Andy says. “Both the Democrats and the Republicans have since destroyed the state’s economy and jeopardized the state’s future.

“Legislators are supposedly meeting in a few days to ‘address’ or ‘resolve’ the state’s multiple pension crises. There is no way out except bankruptcy. Postponing the pension debacle only adds to the state’s liability every day. Simply put, Illinois politicians have made promises they can’t keep and Illinois taxpayers cannot afford.

“Chapter 9 of the federal bankruptcy code allows state agencies to file for bankruptcy protection and to seek to reject burdensome pension plans (see links below) and employment agreements. Municipalities in other states are increasingly doing so. Cook County is bankrupt. Chicago is bankrupt. They are betting that by not paying their bills and postponing the day of financial reckoning they will escape responsibility. It’s not going to happen.

“Likewise various Illinois state pension plans can never pay what they have promised to pay current and future retirees.

“I suggest some of the following:

“First, the bankruptcy court should place an absolute limit on annual pension payouts to any one individual or filing entity. ‘Pension kings’ such as former Governor Jim Edgar who collects a state salary as well as hundreds of thousands in pensions, should be limited. No one who draws a current paycheck should be allowed to also collect a ‘retired’ pension.

“Second, the court should permanently outlaw pension gimmicks: there was the police chief who sought to stick Oakbrook with enhanced liability, the state senator who worked for the executive branch for a few weeks and will collect tens of thousands in additional benefits for life, and so on (some of these practices have been limited going forward, but none address current retirees who are depleting the system).

“The reality is that some pensioners are ripping off the state by colleting excessive pensions based on insider deals and loopholes,” Andy says. “We should protect the smaller pensions of average or ordinary retirees, and eliminate the excessive sums accumulated in the past by ‘gaming the system.’

“Third, state government should convert to a privatized retirement plan. Employees should be given 401 (k)-style accounts with contributions by both the state/municipality and the employee. Employees would actually own their pension assets.

“Fourth, the court should ban Illinois’ current ‘shoebox-style’ financial operations, where the state accumulates unpaid bills and allows revenues and liabilities to stay out of kilter. By law Illinois is supposed to have a balanced budget. But that requirement has been ignored by simply accumulating bills and then not paying them. Enough.

“Fifth, state statutes should be broadened to empower citizens to file lawsuits challenging excessive state spending. Today the state courts have greatly limited citizen participation in challenging government waste and mismanagement.”

In 2005 Andy received national attention when he said General Motors was insolvent and would eventually have to file for bankruptcy reorganization. GM ultimately reorganized in bankruptcy court with the help of federal bailout funds provided by the Obama administration in 2009.

“All of Illinois’ and Chicago’s institutions are dying. Museums and educational institute cannot endure as world-class facilities while their state is slowly sinking into financial oblivion. The Obama-Quinn-Emanuel axis is gradually impoverishing the state and mortgaging the state’s future to pay current bills.

“In effect, today Illinois has ‘no future’” Andy charges.

“Illinois leaders can either voluntarily accept reality, or they can wait to be disgraced and embarrassed when the state can no longer borrow money and effectively has to shut down. To date politicians have ignored reality and pretended there is no crisis. That is a form of governmental insanity.

“Bankruptcy will not be easy or painless. But by placing limits on pension abuses and limits on total payments to individuals and families, the state will start the process of coming back to financial reality. State and local spending is out of control.

“If Illinois leaders think the federal government is going to bail out bankrupt states, they are dreaming,” Andy says.

Andy moved to his mother’s home state of New Hampshire, which has no state income tax and no general sales tax. He says “Smaller government and lower taxes are the future for states. The Illinois/Chicago/Cook County model is becoming history.”

New Hampshire news conference today: Andy Martin may lead New Hampshire GOP

Andy Martin, America’s leading independent conservative writer and Internet Powerhouse, will hold a New Hampshire news conference today, December 22nd to announce he is considering becoming a candidate to lead the New Hampshire Republican Party at the party’s statewide meeting on January 26th. “The Republican Party in New Hampshire is broken,” Andy says. “The legitimate question is who can put the pieces together and start the rebuilding process. Even before January 26th the party has divided into two ‘camps’ or factions. I don’t see how the ‘establishment’ has any claim to leadership when it has lost 8 of 9 gubernatorial elections. The establishment candidate, Jennifer Horn, is totally unqualified and a complete flake. Horn is the Democrats’ dream. Likewise, I am a conservative, but I recognize extremists have become a chain around the Republican Party locally and nationally. The GOP has to serve the people, instead of expecting the people to serve us. We are servants, not masters. I begin my period of discernment with that perspective.”

ATTENTION NATIONAL AND NEW HAMPSHIRE DAYBOOK/ASSIGNMENT EDITORS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Maverick Republican Andy Martin may run for Chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party

Conservative blogger and Internet Powerhouse Andy Martin

says the GOP is broken locally in New Hampshire as well as nationally, and needs to “reboot” with leaders who are committed to pubic service, not political infighting

Andy is beginning a period of “discernment” and asking New Hampshire Republicans to consider and evaluate his proposals for party reform

Andy says the state GOP has already “divided” before the January 26th statewide meeting; Andy believes his experience and skills as a mediator can bring the warring camps together

Andy says Jennifer Horn is the Democratic party’s “dream candidate” for GOP leader

(MANCHESTER, NH) (December 22, 2012) New Hampshire Republican activist and Conservative blogger Andy Martin will hold a Manchester, New Hampshire news conference today, December 22nd to announce he has advised party staffers he may run to become the Chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party.

“Superficially I maybe an improbable candidate,” Andy says. “But I am a lot more ‘probable’ than Jennifer Horn, who is the Democratic Party’s dream for Republican Party chairman. Horn is shrill, divisive and extreme on the issues. I don’t know Andrew Hemingway and I hope to learn more about him during the process. But Hemingway’s supporters have already moved to their ‘own side of the room,’ and are preparing to fight Horn. So the party is totally divided already.

“In the past, I have done well mediating disputes where opposing parties/factions would not speak to each other. I can certainly be oppositional but that is not the role I would play as state chairman.

“We need a healer and a uniter. We need someone committed to reforming the Republican Party.

“I have some ideas, and in the next few days I am going to put pen to paper and publish my ideas for Republicans across the state to consider. They can like or dislike what I have to say. But no one can challenge my experience. I went to work on Capitol Hill 47 years ago. Over the decades I have seen the ebb and flow of both parties.

“During 2011 I was Jack Kimball’s first opponent after Jack became chairman; eventually Kimball was dumped. Horn was Kimball’s acolyte. Then she turned around and stabbed Jack in the back. If Jack wants to bury the hatchet with me, I’m all ears and I will sit down just as soon as Jack is ready to break bread. I believe we can incorporate Tea Party views and values in the GOP. Jack’s supporters can play an important role in rebuilding the party.

“But I am unalterably opposed to Jennifer Horn. Horn represents the ‘death wish’ of the New Hampshire Republican leadership. This New Hampshire GOP ‘leadership’ has given the keys to the Governor’s office to the Democrats in 8 of the last 9 elections. These people are not ‘leaders;’ they are losers. Given their track record they have no right to look down on me or question my own qualifications.

“So, in a nutshell, what’s wrong with the New Hampshire GOP? Republicans have come to expect the people to follow our diktats, instead of us leading and building public opinion. The national platform has become increasingly extreme due to the work of Jennifer Horn and other extremists. While Horn’s handiwork has become more extreme, the State of New Hampshire has become more moderate. There is no way Jennifer Horn can lead Republicans to victory when she is out of step with current New Hampshire views and values.

“I know the right is always bellyaching ‘if only we had a more conservative candidate’ but in 2012 even Republican primary voters knew becoming more extreme was a suicide strategy.

“What we need is a unity strategy. Horn’s candidacy has polarized part of the party, and her sudden makeover as an ‘establishment’ candidate is doomed to failure.

“State Democratic Chairman Ray Buckley was being very generous to tell the Union Leader’s John DiStaso that New Hampshire is a purple’ state (link below). New Hampshire is blue, blue, blue. In 2012 the Democrats outspent the Republicans by almost 10-1. How can Republicans be serious contenders in New Hampshire when they are outspent 10-1?

“Ironically, in seeking to emulate George W. Bush’s guru Karl Rove, Democrats in New Hampshire and in the Obama campaign have ‘exceeded the master.’ Democratic Party technology today is far more powerful than that of the Republicans, which is why Mitt Romney lost.

“Mike Biundo recently had an excellent column in the Union Leader in which he compared the Republicans’ ‘ground game’ with the Democrats’ ‘ground game.’ There is no ‘comparison.’ Basically, the Republicans don’t have any game.

“Obama’s lasting legacy may be that he has left behind a technology platform and technology outreach that gives New Hampshire Democrats a massive head start for 2014.

“Obama has transformed state and national politics by imposing the Chicago style of perpetual campaigning on the national stage. Obama never stopped campaigning after 2008, and he is not going to stop campaigning until he is dragged out of the oval office in 2017. Republicans are deluding themselves if they think they have seen the last of the Obama campaign.

“Obama’s operatives had a lesbian rabbi in Concord try to smear me last year because Obama’s people were afraid I would gain traction in helping Republicans learn how to confront and campaign against Obama’s Chicago-style ‘machine.’ Kimball fell for the ruse, but I long ago forgave Jack. But unless New Hampshire Republicans learn to understand Chicago-style politics we can’t fight what the Democratic Party has become in New Hampshire and nationally: an all-encompassing, European socialist perpetual motion machine.

“My Greek-American ancestors came to Manchester 100 years ago. They realized the America Dream. The American Dream can still work and will work for those who are prepared to work and work hard. I grew up playing on Elm Street, around the corner from where I now live. Should I be selected as Chairman I will constantly endeavor to do honor to my ancestors’ legacy of love for this great nation and this great state.

“I am going to give the question of seeking the Chairmanship serious thought and discernment. My decision will come next week.

“In the meantime, people are welcome to write or call me. I try to personally answer the phone during the day. I would be accessible as chairman.

“If I do decide to become a candidate for party chairman I will be a candidate with new ideas. I will challenge Horn and Hemingway to a series of statewide debates before January 26th so we can see if they have new ideas, or whether they are peddling the same old strategies that have made the New Hampshire GOP a laughingstock in New Hampshire.”

New Hampshire news conference today: Andy Martin says Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s Benghazi whitewash is a disgrace

Andy Martin, America’s leading independent conservative writer and Internet Powerhouse, will hold a New Hampshire news conference today, December 21st to criticize U. S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen for seeking to cover-up the Benghazi terror attacks in order to protect Shaheen’s political crony Secretary Hillary Clinton. “Clinton lied and Americans died,” Andy says. “And Jeanne Shaheen acts as a rubber-stamp for Clinton’s gross incompetence and mismanagement. What is wrong with this picture New Hampshire?” Andy says Shaheen should have demanded a genuinely independent investigation of the Benghazi fiasco. Instead Shaheen tried to protect Clinton and President Obama.

ATTENTION NATIONAL AND NEW HAMPSHIRE DAYBOOK/ASSIGNMENT EDITORS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Conservative blogger and Internet Powerhouse Andy Martin

Criticizes Senator Jeanne Shaheen for Shaheen’s “Benghazi Report” remarks

Andy says Hillary Clinton’s “new vogue,” of “accepting responsibility” for her own incompetence, in reality is a contempt of the American people

Andy demands an independent investigation of Hillary Clinton’s gross mismanagement and total abdication of responsibility on Libya and Benghazi

Andy says Jeanne Shaheen is now and would be in the future a “rubber stamp” for Hillary Clinton

(MANCHESTER, NH) (December 21, 2012) New Hampshire Republican activist and Conservative blogger Andy Martin will hold a Manchester, New Hampshire news conference today, December 21st to criticize U. S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen for trying to cover-up Secretary Hillary Clinton’s mismanagement of the Benghazi murders.

“Senator Shaheen’s attempt to play politics with the Benghazi terrorism victims is an embarrassment to New Hampshire,” says Andy. “Instead of criticizing Secretary Hillary Clinton for gross incompetence and mismanagement, and standing up for the victims, Shaheen sought to whitewash the report by ignoring the unanswered questions and the suspicious procedures used in Clinton’s ‘home cooked’ Benghazi ‘investigation.’

“How could you conduct a real investigation and not ask the Secretary of State what she knew and when she knew it? The State Department internal investigation, while critical of the Department, ultimately was total hogwash as a genuine investigative and truth-seeking effort.

“I would like Senator Shaheen to sit down with the victims’ families and tell them Shaheen does want to ‘relitigate’ the unnecessary and horrific deaths of their loved ones (see Union Leader link below).

“Senator Shaheen has developed a bad case of ‘Potomac Fever,’ to go with Hillary Clinton’s recent attack of imaginary brain damage and questionable ‘concussion.’ Instead of putting ‘country first,’ Shaheen has put friendship first and politics first in seeking to defend Clinton’s gross mismanagement of the Department of State.

“Claiming she was ‘ill,’ Clinton went into hiding just as her testimony was required and as a critical report on her stewardship of the State Department was scheduled to be released. How’s that for convenient timing?

“The ‘new vogue’ is for public officials to ‘accept responsibility’ for their own incompetence and mismanagement and hope that ‘accepting responsibility’ is an excuse and a substitute for the mess they create. Even her own flacks - the internal review board appointed by Clinton – essentially found she was incompetent. Why didn’t the ‘investigators’ question Clinton? Did they question Susan Rice? Did they question Obama? Apparently not.

“What kind of an ‘investigation’ did they conduct? A cover-up and whitewash.

“We need an independent investigation of the Benghazi terror attacks, or a joint congressional committee investigation, not a whitewash.

“Shaheen and Clinton dishonor the dead when they treat their lives as politically expendable.

“If Clinton had stayed at her desk and managed the State Department, instead of joyriding around the world to provide photo-ops for her future presidential campaign, four Americans would be alive and the Benghazi terror attack never would have happened.

“In 2008 Clinton ran a campaign ad questioning who could/would answer the ‘3:00 A.M. phone call.’ When that call came from Libya in 2012, Clinton was AWOL (absent without official leave). Maybe Clinton had another ‘concussion’ on September 11th, or a concussion all year when it came to protecting our diplomats in Libya.

“If President Obama had ever managed anything as sophisticated as a lemonade stand, he would have known that a ‘manger’ such as Clinton that has the jitters and won’t stay at her desk, should be let go. Thankfully, Clinton is retiring. Clinton is leaving office in disgrace, with the ‘Blood of Benghazi’ on her hands.

“But we are still stuck with Shaheen.

“New Hampshire is a patriotic state. We go to the defense of our citizens. We do not leave them to die alone, hours after an alarm bell has sounded that they are under attack. Instead of honoring the dead and calling for full disclosure, Jeanne Shaheen has tried to put a lid on the Benghazi fiasco.

“Shaheen’s response to Benghazi represented politics at its worst, not senators at their best. The People of New Hampshire have an ‘entitlement’ to adequate and proper national security. Clinton and Shaheen have dishonored any reasoned concept of national security. Shaheen says we should ‘forget the past, just look ahead.’ Well, we had security procedures in effect all during 2012. And those procedures failed. The procedures were manipulated for political effect.

“‘Looking forward’ is just an excuse for not looking at the failures of the Obama-Clinton-Shaheen foreign policy.

“Shaheen’s capitulation on Benghazi, and her failure to call for more investigation and more disclosure by independent investigators and not State Department shills, is a dishonor to the dead and an embarrassment to New Hampshire.

“Real Americans want the truth. Real Americans do not abandon other Americans when they are under attack,” Andy charges.

Andy will hold his news conference on the sidewalk in front of Shaheen’s Manchester office.

New Hampshire news conference today: Andy Martin says school security should be the first priority

Andy Martin, America’s leading independent conservative writer and Internet Powerhouse, will hold a New Hampshire news conference today, December 20th to announce he is asking New Hampshire state legislators to adopt a statewide code for school security. “In the wake of the shooting in Connecticut, schools need clear and consistent security standards,” Andy says. “I also believe school security should be a national priority, at the state level, because ‘passive’ security measures do not require ‘gun control’ legislation and every school district may act immediately.”

ATTENTION NATIONAL AND NEW HAMPSHIRE DAYBOOK/ASSIGNMENT EDITORS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Conservative blogger and Internet Powerhouse Andy Martin

says school security should be an immediate New Hampshire and national priority

Andy says “passive” school security standards and procedures could help avoid violence, deter “copycat” killers and provide a record for any necessary investigation

Andy says school security standards do not necessarily require national or state legislation and may be adopted immediately where local law allows

(MANCHESTER, NH) (December 20, 2012) New Hampshire Republican activist and Conservative blogger Andy Martin will hold a Manchester, New Hampshire news conference today, December 20th to announce he is asking New Hampshire state legislators to adopt a statewide school security policy for every New Hampshire school. Andy says legislators and statewide school boards or administrators nationally should also adopt school security standards to help avoid tragedies similar to the Newtown, Connecticut shooting.

“Politicians and political interest groups have announced they want a grand battle over ‘gun control,’” Andy says. “I have no problem with that. People are entitled to their opinions, even Vice President Joe Biden. I will certainly express my views on President Obama’s potential gun-grabbing.

“But as the adults battle in Washington and in state capitols, schoolchildren remain unprotected even though there are serious concerns about potential ‘copycat’ killers.

“Today I announce that I am asking New Hampshire state legislators to adopt a statewide code of school security standards and procedures. In other states this code could be adopted by legislators or statewide school administrators.

“Unlike gun control debates, which could drag on for many months and years, school security standards are an immediate statewide and national priority. Security procedures are not controversial and can be implemented immediately.

“Passive security can involve seeing that every school has security cameras installed. I am amazed at how many crimes today, including potential terrorist incidents, are solved due to pervasive security cameras in large cities. I am not aware that any security tapes exist of the attack in Newtown. Every school needs a system of security cameras. They are not particularly expensive to install, they deter crime, and they provide a permanent record in the event of an incident.

“Likewise, schools should have a detailed system of internal notification. Every classroom and school administrator should be able to sound a loud alarm bell and provide a kill switch to alert administrators if a security breach takes place.

“If the Sandy Hook receptionist had sounded a loud alarm bell, it is likely that Adam Lanza would have either retreated or killed himself sooner.

“Loud alarms alert criminals to the fact they are being resisted and they cost almost nothing to install.

“We know what went wrong in Newtown, and we know what went right. The principal had adopted an enhanced security system this year. The school was locked. While the security door did not stop Adam Lanza the locked entry may have delayed him and alerted others (which is why we need loud alarm bells in every area of the school) that an intruder was present.

“Security alarms should be directly linked to local first responders so the police call back immediately to confirm what is happening; ‘Passive’ security can still be proactive.

“I am sure school administrators and statewide administrators and legislators can study ‘best practices’ and arrive at a code for New Hampshire as well as for every school in the nation.

“While adults battle on over how to react to Newtown, we know how to enhance security and how especially to deter ‘copycat’ killers from succeeding. Despite the fact that we could take immediate action,” Andy says, “No one is pushing immediate action on statewide school security. That is, until today.

“I will continue to be a catalyst for protecting our children at every stage of the school day. I know that in New Hampshire some schools have been taking innovative steps to ensure children are properly called for (see link below) but I also realize that some local educators have relegated school security to a lesser priority (see link below). After today, there is no excuse for delay in adopting clear, consistent statewide school security standards for every school child in the nation.”

Andy Martin says liberal lies quickly contaminate our national grief over Newtown school shooting

Andy Martin, America’s leading independent conservative writer and Internet Powerhouse, says anti-gun extremists were quick to seize on the school shooting tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut to argue for a “gun control agenda.” Andy analyzes what happened in Newtown and offers his own explanation for unexplained and unexplainable violence by young men. Andy says the Second Amendment is not the problem; the Democratic Party’s willful blindness to the impact of Hollywood violence is the root cause of the growing threat to American society.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Conservative blogger and Internet Powerhouse Andy Martin

says “liberal lies” are distorting the reality of what happened in Newtown, Connecticut

Andy says Hollywood’s violent entertainment has become a threat to America’s psychological security

Andy says “nothing will change” as a result of the Newtown school shooting, because Republicans have the Constitution in their favor and Democrats are unwilling to confront the impact of violent entertainment propagated by the party’s Hollywood “base”

(MANCHESTER, NH) (December 15, 2012) Conservative blogger and Internet Powerhouse Andy Martin offers a detailed analysis of what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut and points the blame at Hollywood’s violent entertainment for the latest random shooting.

The nation was and is in shock. National mourning for the lost lives is appropriate. And yet liberal Democratic Party ghouls were quick to pounce on the random tragedy to advance their pernicious gun control agenda. Andy, one of President Barack Obama’s leading opponents, surprisingly opens his remarks with words of praise for the president. Here are Andy’s thoughts:

I. An overview of the tragedy

A. It’s OK to cry

I don’t often have kind words to say about Barack Obama but I believe both he and his administration struck the proper tone on Friday afternoon when the nation was in shock and mourning. Obama could not hide his own tears. I know I felt droplets of water coming down my cheeks as I watched hours of television coverage.

Obama reminded us it’s Ok to cry when we confront extreme violence and sudden death. Although the Newton murders were caused by a single individual, the large number of victims made the school shooting a national tragedy. Obama made an obligatory statement that something “needs to be done” but his administration thoughtfully stated that Friday was “not the day” to begin a political battle over the nation’s gun laws.

B. Sometimes saturation media coverage is also OK

There was, of course, wall-to-wall media coverage of the Connecticut shootings. Evening news broadcasts were extended; network anchors headed for nearby Newtown, Connecticut, 60 miles from New York. Sometimes media overdo their coverage of senseless, tragic, random events. But not on Friday the 14th. Late in the day the anti-gun bias of the media began to seep into the coverage but overall the horrific events were covered in a reasonable manner.

II. The liberals’ response

Within hours attention was shifting from the children who had been murdered to coverage of liberal Democrat demands for “gun control.” Ironically, an Illinois liberal had just penned a column documenting that “concealed carry” laws do not lead to an increase in gun violence (see link #1 below). In other words, excessive gun control does not lead to more safety and security.

In the days ahead we can expect an orgy of media demands to “do something” about “guns.” And yet the Democrats refuse to do what needs to be done: we must stem the tide of violent Hollywood entertainment that is destabilizing children and young adults.

As soon as the dimensions of the Newtown tragedy became apparent the “usual suspects” starting blaming inadequate gun control (see link #2 below) as the cause of the mass murders. Nothing could be further from the truth.

III. My theory of Hollywood-generated violence

A. I have spent parts of my adult life studying violence and mental illness. During the Viet-Nam war I realized how violence in battle could sow the seeds of post traumatic stress disorder. I had a bit role in the My Lai Massacre controversy and ended up on my first presidential enemies list when I commented that men lost control dealing with endless combat. Later I studied violence in Cambodia, Laos, Iraq and Iran.

I grew up in a town with a mental institution, which we regularly visited, and saw the ravages of pre-Thorazine incarceration for the mentally ill. As a young law student I became interested in the connection between law and psychiatry. I have seen close friends devastated by mental illness and advised psychiatric patients on their problems. While living in Florida I had a “concealed carry” permit and regularly went out shooting with friends. Living in Connecticut my life was threatened and I legally purchased a shotgun for home defense. So I have not led a life in the isolated liberal media cocoon where all violence is bad and only guns are the cause.

Over the past forty-six years I have seen violence from every angle and studied mental illness up close. That is why every time there is a random shooting - and the liberal chorus begins to sing for gun control - I fight back and expose Hollywood’s violent entertainment as the greatest threat to young minds, with an infinitesimal number of those minds eventually going berserk and committing random crimes.

Who do I blame for the violence? Well, I’m of an age and cohort (the “boomers”) who grew up watching innocuous 1950’s television. There were westerns on TV, but violence was a sideshow. Even into the late 1960’s excessively violent movies created a stir. Violent “games” had not been invented.

The level of violent entertainment today is unprecedented. And violent entertainment is having an increasing effect on a growing number of young people. Saturation violence has become a serious national problem.

But there was no mention of saturation Hollywood violence in any of the Newtown shooting coverage. In fairness, out of the millions who are somewhat impacted by Hollywood violence, less than a dozen have gone on to commit mass murders. But Hollywood violence is at the core of these individuals’ dysfunction. There also seems to be a “gender gap” with violence. Boys, who often become addicted to violent games, appear more vulnerable than girls, but we don’t really don’t have solid research.

IV. Why nothing will change as a result of the Newtown shooting

The Newtown school shooting tragedy will follow a predictable path. First there will be a sudden awareness of the enormous tragedy. Then the media firestorm will take over. The media barrage will be followed by liberal storm troopers who seek to attack the National Rifle Association (NRA) and who demand “gun control” as a solution to what in reality is a problem rooted in random madness and mental illness.

Reality will set in, eventually. Adam Lanza had serious mental problems. Already he has gone from being the random “gunman” to being a mental case in the New York Daily News (link #3 below) which published the first summary of Lanza’s troubled personal history. The New York Post quickly followed with a headline that Lanza was “autistic” and may have been “home-schooled” (link #4 below), followed by more muted article in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal (link #5). Wait until the parents of autistic and home-schooled children respond.

Like all of his predecessors in mass murder, Lanza was someone with clear indications of severe mental illness and social alienation. But only the New York Daily News coverage focused on Lanza’s predilection for video games (link #1).

Standing back from the media firestorm it is clear that all of the recent mass murderers have had fixations with violent entertainment, and have had emotional developmental difficulties that left them unable to function as adults. Lanza was living “at home” with his mother, who was “caring” for her 20 year-old son.

The only bizarre issue in the entire Newtown shooting episode is why Lanza’s mother had three extremely dangerous firearms in the home when she knew her son had serious emotional disturbances. Was denial a factor? Did Lanza's highly successful, educated, wealthy parents find it difficult to confront the obvious evidence about their son? That’s the real question. In time the truth will emerge. Mrs. Lanza’s poor judgment is clearly the root cause of the latest massacre, not any “liability” on the part of the inanimate guns themselves.

I am not alone if focusing on the serious psychiatric impact of violent entertainment. But the reality of where violent entertainment comes from, and who profits from this violence, are difficult issues for Democrats to confront. Violent video games and films are produced by the real “base” of the Democratic Party: Hollywood. Hollywood money elected Rahm Emanuel Mayor of Chicago. Hollywood money reelected President Barack Obama. How can Democrats challenge their financial base and admit that Hollywood’s violent profiteering is endangering young minds? And so Democrats ignore the “elephant in the room” – the impact of Hollywood’s violent entertainment on young minds – and prefer to attack “guns” as the root cause of our national challenge. Guns, which can’t fight back, are safer targets than psychiatrists, who can identify the real causes of violence.

Even within the last week a profiling pattern emerges from the two violent individuals who committed mass murder: they were both mentally and emotionally challenged young men, socially dysfunctional and part of alienated, separated families. I am not a psychiatrist and I do not have all of the answers; but I do have legitimate questions. Boys appear to be more vulnerable to violent stimuli. Boys also seem more vulnerable to marital breakdowns. And yet we have to keep matters in perspective; despite the fact that children are exposed to an unprecedented avalanche of violent entertainment, the number of people who become mass murderers is infinitesimal.

Another interesting factor is that many of these mass murderers come from suburban home environments. The urban jungle has yet to produce a mass murder at a school. Why? I don’t know. There is certainly violence in urban areas, but no mass murderers. Why not? A fair question.

Blaming “guns” and “lax gun control” are easy answers. And Democrats love easy solutions. But random violence and mass murder do not stem from guns themselves. New Hampshire is loaded with guns. We do not see 20-somethings committing mass murders. Rather, at the national level we confront a psychiatric crisis in identifying that tiny number of people who morph from disturbed children into adults confronted by alienation, despair and vulnerability, and lack resilience and coping mechanisms.

The NRA is not to blame for Adam Lanza; the second Amendment is not to blame for his mass murder spree. “Guns” are not to blame. Adam Lanza was a mentally ill young adult whose principal caretaker, his mother, had the bad judgment to have a small arsenal of legally purchased guns present in the home. Adam’s mom paid with her life for her error in judgment. There is no way society is responsible for parental mistakes. Connecticut has relatively strict gun laws. If a parent is dumb enough to leave guns openly accessible while caring for a mentally ill child, what can you expect?

We can mourn the loss of the children. And we should mourn the loss of the children. As President Obama said, we should clutch our children closely and tell them we love them. But we must also exercise parental and societal vigilance to identify that small number of individuals who may pose a threat to themselves and society. That’s the mundane explanation for what happened Friday. Mrs. Lanza made a tragic error in judgment. And her mistake proved fatal.

After the stripping away liberal lies and media exaggerations, the explanation for what happened in Newtown is that simple. That is why there will be no new gun laws, and no changes in existing regulations. People make mistakes. Sometimes they pay for their mistakes with their lives. We must mourn, but we will survive. We are a resilient nation. America cannot and should now be held hostage by a handful of mass murderers.
