U S Senate candidate Andy Martin fights to save Manchester Airport as facility is endangered by American Airlines merger

New Hampshire U. S. Senate candidate Andy Martin will hold a New York City news conference Thursday, November 14th to announce he will fight approval of the proposed antitrust settlement allowing American Airlines and U S Airways to merge. “The settlement is bad for New Hampshire, and could be fatal for Manchester Airport,” Andy says. “The combined airline needs to cut flights at LaGuardia, and Manchester will be high on the hit list. Jeanne Shaheen is, as usual, asleep at the switch, fatigued by too many late nights raising campaign cash in New York City and hobnobbing with Senator Charles Schumer.

The settlement tilts the competitive balance sharply in favor of Logan, and against Manchester. I urge the New Hampshire business community to join me in fighting to amend the proposed antitrust settlement to include strong protections for Manchester Airport.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW YORK CITY NEWS CONFERENCE

ATTENTION NATIONAL, NEW YORK CITY, BUSINESS AND NEW HAMPSHIRE DAYBOOK/ASSIGNMENT EDITORS

New Hampshire Republican U. S. Senate candidate Andy Martin launches opposition to proposed settlement and approval of American Airlines merger

Andy says the terms of a proposed settlement of an antitrust suit against U S Airways and American Airlines could doom Manchester Airport

Andy’s antitrust experience becomes a vital asset for the People of New Hampshire in rebuilding the regional economy

(Manchester, NH) (November 14, 2013) New Hampshire Republican U. S. Senate candidate Andy Martin will hold a New York news conference today, Thursday, November 14th to announce he will oppose the proposed settlement of the antitrust lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice against American Airlines and U S Airways.

“The settlement terms of this lawsuit will doom Manchester Airport,” Andy says. “The two airlines have cut a deal with Eric Holder’s justice Department that is complete window dressing. But more important than the innocuous aspects of the settlement, the agreement strengthens Logan Airport and weakens Manchester Airport.

“Sadly, the states that were co-plaintiffs in the antitrust action made out well in the settlement, and the states such as New Hampshire that did not join the lawsuit were left out in the cold.

Manchester Airport is a crucial transportation link for northern New England. But the airport’s competitive position has been eroding because of the earlier airline mergers. The merger of U S Airways could be the final nail in the coffin. I urge the New Hampshire business community to wake up before it is too late. We  need to form a united front and petition the federal court in Washington to amend the proposed final judgment to add protections for Manchester Airport.

“Nineteen years ago I created the Committee to Fight Microsoft and revolutionized antitrust law (please see group link #1 below). At the time, state attorneys general had not developed a presence in high technology litigation. I personally petitioned all fifty state attorneys general to oppose the 1995 Microsoft settlement. I accurately predicted the original [1995] settlement was defective and ineffective, and that the settlement would only be followed by a second round of antitrust litigation, which is what happened. My antitrust expertise and my analysis have stood the test of time. I acted as a catalyst to energize state attorneys general to ‘get involved’ in high technology litigation. In 1995 they were absent; by the time of the second Microsoft lawsuit they had become major players.

“Ultimately the American Airlines/U S Airways merger is going to be approved. But I will fight to see that the proposed judgment/settlement is amended to include favorable terms for Manchester Airport. Manchester is in dire danger of losing non-stop flights to New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

New Hampshire competitive economic position, and that of adjacent areas of Maine and Vermont, are bolstered by the presence of a strong Manchester Airport. The converse is also true: if Manchester Airport declines, New Hampshire and the surrounding region will also suffer a competitive loss. New Hampshire officials have been ignoring the decline and competitive erosion of Manchester Airport. ‘Sleepy Jeanne’ Shaheen has been asleep when it comes to protecting Manchester Airport.

“I am the only U. S. Senate candidate who understands the challenges facing Manchester Airport and who has the experience and skills to be an effective advocate for the airport in Washington. Shaheen goes to New York to collect campaign cash and to take orders from her liberal handlers. But Shaheen has done nothing to protect Manchester Airport or to advance the interests of the regional economy. The regional economy and the entire State of New Hampshire depend on a strong Manchester Airport.

“Because the proposed AA/U S Airways agreement strengthens Logan, if changes are not made the lights will eventually go out at Manchester Airport and it will no longer function as a major regional airport. I am fighting to save Manchester Airport, and I am fighting to see that a judicial order does not negatively impact our regional asset,” Andy says.
