(CHICAGO)(September 30, 2008) I flew home to Chicago on Sunday night and the woman sitting next to me called Senator John McCain a “grumpy grandpa” in Friday’s national debate. Sad to say, she was not far off the mark. McCain did win on Friday, barely, but only because Barack Obama is an equally incompetent debater.

Let me begin with the obvious:

Senator John McCain is an outstanding public official. Senator McCain has an illustrious career of public service. He is a good and decent man. David Brooks of the New York Times summarized McCain’s positive attributes in a recent column:

McCain is also the only qualified candidate for president. And I will vote for McCain. But that does not mean I can remain silent in the face of McCain’s abysmal TV “face.” Unless McCain changes, he will lose. If he changes, he may win.

The senator is one of the worst TV performers, and one of the worst TV debaters, in recent national experience. McCain has to realize and accept reality: he has to change for TV; TV won’t and can’t change for him.

McCain’s “debate coaches” are now said to be helping Governor Sarah Palin prepare for her debate later this week. God help her. Palin’s “coaches” took someone who has been on TV for decades, Palin, and have made her look goofy in interviews. Some coaching. They coached Palin backwards, not forwards. Now they claim to be giving her more of the same medicine. Scary.

In this column I will analyze why, on reflection, McCain’s debate performance was so poor and why, unless he changes course and gets new debate advisers, he is doomed to failure, and we are doomed to four years of disaster under Barack Obama.

I speak from experience. People in Illinois have seen me debate on Channel 7 (WLS-TV). I can handle myself under the lights. I have been working in TV for forty years.

McCain operates under a number of fallacies.

First, McCain’s “experience” fallacy. McCain is an experienced candidate and public official. No doubt. He has a generally outstanding record. But most people are not going to make a decision based on McCain’s legislative record, could care less, and will judge him on how he appears on TV. That’s reality. McCain has to present his experience in a friendly way, without “You don’t understands” and the like. McCain has to learn to proffer his accomplishments in a less didactic manner. McCain made his experience a negative on TV last Friday. Hello, Senator Bob Dole.

McCain, moreover, sounded too much like a legislative technician. People are not voting for a legislative mechanic. They are voting for a “big picture” leader. McCain’s constant babbling about legislation is a downer for most voters and especially TV viewers. He needs to provide a vision. He completely failed to do on Friday. What the hell kind of preparation did he do? Was the debate a surprise, or what? Who takes the blame? McCain totally failed to present a vision of where he wants to lead us.

Second, McCain’s “no attacks” fallacy. If McCain were leading, he might be able to avoid attacking his opponent. But when he is behind, he has to give viewers a reason to reject Obama. The trend is Obama’s, not McCain’s. If McCain is going to win, he has to reverse the flow, not sit by and expect to prevail on his own merits. McCain has to invest his own prestige in taking down Obama. McCain may think he should win simply because he is the better candidate. Sorry, that’s not enough of a strategy when you fall behind.

Third, the “missing issues” fallacy. Sean Hannity of Fox News did an outstanding piece linking Obama to the mortgage loan scandal. McCain made no effort to present any evidence against Obama. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbyVvcDmLhQ

If Sean Hannity could get it right, why can’t McCain’s advisers do the same?

McCain made no effort to link Obama to ACORN. Yet ACORN handouts in the bailout bill were one factor that triggered massive public opposition to congressional offices. Does McCain even understand the ACORN connection? Does he care? Can he be trained to present it? One hopes.

Bad loans flowed from the 1999 law signed by Bill Clinton and endorsed by Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin (Goldman Sachs). Democrats pushed for bad loans. McCain was the proverbial deer-in-the-headlights with the financial crisis issue. Instead of counterattacking Obama and showing how Democrats created the crisis, McCain was supine and allowed Obama to relentlessly attack him as a Bush clone.

Fourth, the “small bore” fallacy. McCain was on a national stage. He had a platform to attack Obama and finish him off. Instead, McCain empowered and enhanced Obama’s credibility by sitting by and allowing Obama to present himself as a real candidate. If Obama wins, he will have McCain’s abysmal TV performance to thank.

McCain cheapened himself by bringing up the “bear DNA” issue again. The bear DNA earmark is a delightful morsel for a partisan audience. No problem there. But it was out of place on the national stage. If all McCain can talk about on a national platform is bear DNA he demeans himself and leaves the impression that he has no larger disagreements with Obama. A national audience is there to hear a debate on major issues. McCain diminished himself and 55 million viewers by raising a small bore issue. Next time, senator, use a magnum, not a peashooter. Don’t waste my time with stale jokes about bear DNA.

Fifth, McCain’s “Phil Gramm” fallacy. McCain should not be using Phil Gramm’s stale analogies. The “Ireland tax” issue McCain used is straight out of an interview with Gramm last June in the Wall Street Journal. Didn’t they have anything newer? Something original with McCain and not secondhand from Gramm? I wish.

Sixth, McCain’s Iraq fallacy. His comments on Iraq were pathetic and inadequate. All he had to say was, “Barack, your running mate Joe Biden voted for the invasion; Senator Clinton voted for the invasion. Senator such-and-such (Democrat) voted for the invasion. What did they know that you don’t know? Isn’t Biden your foreign policy expert? When you opposed the war, you were not a U. S. Senator, you were a state senator in Springfield. As Senator Clinton pointed out, when you got to Washington you started voting to support the mission. Stop trying to confuse the American people by suggesting you actually cast a vote against our Iraq policy when that is a complete lie.” (Because McCain’s overall response was pathetic, his correct point that we need to look forward, not backward, was lost in Obama’s sniper attacks.) McCain could have made a perfect volley and wiped out Obama. McCain was not properly prepared for what would be an obvious issue. He could have thrown the grenade right back at the Democrats. He missed the chance. Fat chance he’ll get another opening.

Over the past week McCain has done everything he can to enhance Barack Obama’s stature, and to diminish his own. Who is advising McCain? The results of McCain’s disastrous strategies are obvious in new polls. McCain has fumbled his lead to Obama.

McCain’s seventh fallacy is his stance on the bank bailout. McCain says he is voting “for” the bailout, but he also opposes it. (Note to Johnny Mac: the “improvements” you claim in the latest draft of the law are all illusory.) McCain is using John Kerryesque sophistry. Your contrapuntal position is much too convoluted for the average citizen to grasp. Are you for me or against me, they ask? McCain’s legislative subtleties are wasted on a TV set. There he is being the legislative technician again. A losing strategy.

Eighth, the “congeniality” fallacy. McCain keeps reminding people he is not “Miss Congeniality” in the senate. Who cares? He has to come across as Mr. Congeniality on the tube. McCain is supposedly coached by Brett O’Donnell. O’Donnell should be replaced today. O’Donnell completely failed to prepare McCain for TV. What did O’Donnell prepare McCain for? He was sure not prepared for a TV audience of 55 million viewers. Nosiree.

McCain might be stubborn, but if he refuses to accept TV advice he will lose, and the loss will be entirely his own fault. Congenial people on TV win audiences and win elections. McCain seems to think he can convince the American people to vote for him because Obama does “not understand” the world. That’s a massive misunderstanding of the camera. The camera does not like people who hector and lecture (luckily for me I am not speaking this column on TV; if I were, I would be smiling and using a rose petal, not a sledge hammer).

O’Donnell hasn’t even taught McCain how to smile. If McCain won’t listen to advice, maybe McCain should go back and watch The Gipper’s TV performances.

I would have prepped McCain entirely differently. Loosen him up. I understand he is a jocular person in person (or private). Why not let the real McCain shine through? He is not going to win by appearing as the grumpy grandpa.

Bottom line: McCain is his own worst enemy on TV. He fumbled a great opportunity to finish off Obama in the first debate, when McCain still had the lead. Now he has to come from behind, again.

If McCain was badly coached, get rid of his closest advisers. McCain is not going to change TV to fit him or to conform to his personality. McCain will either obey the “laws of TV,” or he will go down in flames. That should concentrate the attention of a fighter pilot.

P. S. I have received some criticism from readers who do not like me calling McCain “grandpa.” First, the “grandpa” analogy is not my original thought. Second, the fact that McCain is perceived that way by many others should concern him. Finally, McCain can take it. This column should be a wake-up call; it is not meant to be sweet and snuggly. “We have had to add computing power,” says Martin. “We are ramping up to keep the pressure on Congress to block the bailout. This is a war we can’t afford to lose. The American people are being robbed blind by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and his wolf pack of ‘Paulson’s Predators.’ They tried to intimidate the House of Representatives into voting for a massive giveaway, and failed. We need to ensure Paulson and his cronies keep losing.

“September 29, 2008 will be remembered as a historic day, when the American people said ‘enough,’ and began a battle to block the Wall Street bailout.

“Henry Paulson is also going down in history. He will be remembered as one of the greediest and most corrupt people to ever serve in the cabinet of the United States.

“We have seen how the evil Mr. Paulson claims he is trying to help Main Street, while he steals tens of billions of dollars in small shareholders’ equity and transfers this hard-earned and hard-saved wealth to the vipers of Wall Street. Paulson is wiping out retirements across the United States. Last week Paulson robbed the shareholders of Washington Mutual and gave it to a New York bank. This week he stole the shareholders’ equity of Wachovia Bank and handed it over to Citibank, another New York bank. Before that it was Bear Stearns. Who will be burglarized tomorrow to feed the insatiable appetite of Paulsen’s cronies?

“How can any Representative or Senator running in November vote for a bailout knowing that their own local or regional banks may be burglarized next by Paulson & Co? ‘Paulson’s Predators’ are out looking for more banks to seize and deliver as tribute to his Wall Street masters at Goldman Sachs.

“Paulson has spent a lifetime serving New York’s banks. Why would we expect him to suddenly put the people ahead of his own personal profits? When has Goldman Sachs ever put the people ahead of its profits?

“Paulson’s corrupt cronies, the ‘Friends of Paulson,’ are out to steal everything they can before the Democrats move in and start a new round of their own kleptomania. Goldman Sachs also owns a controlling interest in the Democratic Party.

“Barack Obama’s coterie of cronies is not any better. He had a former Fannie Mae boss, Jim Johnson, leading his vice presidential search team. Frank Raines, who looted tens of millions of dollars from Fannie Mae and used crooked bookkeeping to enrich himself, also claims to be an Obama adviser. An Obama administration would offer more of the same cronyism and corruption. Obama has received more campaign cash from Wall Street than John McCain. Greed is a bipartisan affliction in Washington. That is why today’s defeat of the bank bailout is so satisfying,” Martin says.

Martin is an unusual combination of financial expert and consumer protector. He began studying Wall Street as a young man, went to work for the bane of Wall Street, U. S. Senator Paul Douglas, and became an expert on bank holding companies. Andy conducted the first administrative trial at the Federal Reserve Board. He battled Citibank’s efforts to increase interest rates on consumer loans by expanding in South Dakota.

Martin is best known worldwide for his crusading radio talk show host, which originated in Palm Beach, Florida and was carried worldwide over the Internet (not currently on the air).

Since graduating from the University of Illinois College of Law Andy has been a relentless opponent of judicial and legal corruption across America. In the 1970’s he helped send crooked Cook County (Chicago) judges to prison.

Wall Street is robbing Main Street, says Andy Martin, as New York banks seek revenge for the success of their competitors on Main Street. THE “GREATEST BANK BURGLARY, EVER?” ASKS MARTIN

(CHICAGO)(September 29, 2008) Ho hum. Another day. Another theft of shareholder’s capital. Another giveaway, all in the name of “crisis,” of valuable assets to New York City’s banking giants. Who profits from this emerging consumer banking monopoly? Not consumers, that’s for sure.

Where’s Grandpa McCain on this one? I have no idea. Where is Barack Obama? With his big smile in front, and his open palm in back. That’s my Barry O.

I have been involved with the banking industry, and banking regulation, for over forty years. I worked for a U. S. Senator who wrote most of our original banking and consumer protection legislation, Senator Paul H. Douglas of Illinois. I tried the first bank holding company case at the Federal Reserve Board in 1973. I have watched great bankers such as Walter Wriston, and their bumbling successors such as Sanford Weil.

And I do not like what I see in Washington. The companies that built national baking franchises, such as Wachovia and Washington Mutual, are being highway robbed to reward firms that were unable and unwilling to expand nationally, such as Citibank and Chase. New York Goldman Sachs power broker (“power broken?”) and temporary Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is using the cover of a so-called “financial crisis” to take revenge over America’s consumer banking industry and to steal tens of billions of dollars from Main Street for the benefit of Wall Street. All while flowing with crocodile tears that he is trying to help Main Street. Nice work if you can get it. Save me.

Wall Street and New York never got over the fact that New York banks failed to expand nationally, while Charlotte became a banking capital and Seattle also hosted a successful nationwide bank. They wanted revenge. In the past few weeks, they got blood. Or maybe green. Tens of billions of dollars of green.

Paulson claims he is bailing out Wall Street to save Main Street. But he is stealing banks that were built on Main Street and handing them over to enrich Wall Street. In the process, he has unnecessarily destroyed tens of billions of dollars of shareholder equity all across the United States. On Main Street.

After having pioneered consumer banking in the New York region, Citibank has a failed national consumer franchise. “Bank of America" is nominally still headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Have you seen the bank’s new “headquarters” on Sixth Avenue and Forty-Second Street in Manhattan? Take a look, and then tell me where the power will reside, and where the decisions will be made. Chase Bank? They got Paulson to wipe out Bear Stearns’ shareholders to reward Chase with an investment banking base.

Chase, Citi and BkAm are three peas in a pod: they charge consumers the highest fees and have the poorest customer service. Far from being "too big to fail," they are "too big to succeed." Main Street banking is on the verge of being strangled, and no one in Washington is standing up to fight back.

What penalty do the three giants pay for their failed or imperfect strategies? None whatsoever. Paulson is stealing tens of billions of dollars from the shareholders of other banks (Washington Mutual, Wachovia) to enrich the New York behemoths.

What a steal. Such a deal?

Who do you vote against? Wall Street has given more money to Obama than McCain. Vote against Obama? There is no reason to doubt the kleptocracy will continue under Obama. Obama buys peace with Wall Street so he can do his thing on the “street” in the Middle East and South Asia.

Grandpa McCain? Well, he’s just worried about the DNA of all those fornicating bears in Montana. I think McCain is personally scrupulously honest. Maybe he might do something. But then, maybe not. Sleaze is a bipartisan affliction in Washington; both McCain and Obama are overloaded with sleazy camp followers. I will have more to say about McCain later today.

Who do you vote against? We have two sets of thieves vying to take control of the federal government, each group composed of greedy hucksters who will stop at nothing to enrich themselves and screw the public. Stealing from Main Street (Washington Mutual, Wachovia) to enrich Wall Street (Citibank, Chase, BkAm)? Great work if you can get it. It’s becoming an addiction for Washington power brokers.

Communism, capitalism, totalitarianism, whatever. The people in power are always trying to steal from the ordinary citizen. Once you start stealing from the people, and get away with it, it’s hard to stop.

If you don’t believe me, just ask the shareholders of Bear Stearns, Wachovia Bank and Washington Mutual how they feel. See what they say.

DID SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN ACQUIESCE IN HIS OWN DEFEAT?

(NEW YORK)(September 25, 2008) There he was on the front page of every newspaper today: Senator Barack Obama, invited by President George Bush to help solve the "financial crisis" that is supposedly threatening America. I have a queasy feeling Bush and Senator John McCain may have made the biggest blunder in presidential politics since President Jerry Ford in 1976 said Poland was not in the Soviet sphere of influence.

I know, I know, "County First," not politics. But are they really putting their country first if they elect Barack Obama and inflict Obama on the world for the next four years?

McCain's biggest calling card has been Obama's "stature gap." Barry O could stage a rock festival in a Berlin park, but no one in Washington gave him any credibility. Obama has no experience, no record and no particular level of support among Washington Democrats except profuse "lip service." Who the hell is Barack Obama?

He may have become the next president courtesy of George Bush, and a massive blunder by John McCain.

Wednesday night Obama was already claiming that the Bush White House had accepted "his policies" to solve the financial "crisis." As this is being written there are reports a "deal" has been reached. Obama will have attained the last stop on his self-referential crusade by being accepted at the White House as a statesman and dealmaker. Good grief.

Ooops.

Bush and McCain have erased Obama's stature gap. How is McCain going to say Obama lacks experience if Obama is being called to the White House to solve a (in my opinion nonexistent) "crisis?"

Bush and McCain just handled Obama a loaded gun. Watch Obama shoot Republicans with it, and claim that his "strong leadership" led to a "successful negotiation" which culminated in "rescuing America." Who gave Obama this weapon? Why George Bush and John McCain, of course. When the president calls you in a "crisis," Obama has a legitimate claim to stature.

I have to give a speech to a Republican dinner this evening. I am not a happy camper. On the other hand, the people who gave us the mess in Washington are also influential in the 2008 campaign, so what can we expect? Chopped liver?

Fasten your seat belts. It's a mess.

ANDY MARTIN: I LISTENED TO PRESIDENT BUSH AND HE DID NOT PERSUADE ME

IS SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN HEADING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION?

(NEW YORK)(September 25, 2008) I have been involved in politics and business for over forty years. It's long enough to have seen lots of ups and downs. I remember the 1966 recession; that slump removed the Democrats' "Thousand Year Congress," after two years, and helped put Republicans on the road to victory. The wage and price controls of the early 1970's? They were an accident waiting to happen; and it happened.
The stratospheric interest rates of the late 1970's? They broke me financially; imagine what it's like to be getting a letter from your bank almost every day, saying your "floating" interest rate went up again. The interest rate was floating and soon enough I was too. The recession of the early 1980's? One to die for.

But I also remember opening our first office in the World Trade Center on January 1, 1974. Soon thereafter New York City went bust. Things did not look very bright. Three years later New York was in a real estate boom. Prices skyrocketed. There was a real estate slump in the early 90's, followed by another boom.

When I graduated from college in 1966 I went to an experienced real estate investor for advice. He told me he was not buying property until interest rates fell below 6%. That took a third of a century. He had along wait. In the meantime, I made money.

And so, yes, I have seen a lot of ups and downs in the economy.

I have a friend who is a stock market investor. She went to cash over a year ago. "Better too soon than too late," she said. Smart girl. She also lost a pile in the "dot.com" disaster. Not so smart.

Which leads me to Wednesday night.

First, President Bush's face had a curiously flat appearance. He didn’t look the same as he usually does. Was he afraid? Dieting? Tired? Trying to be super-serious? I have no idea. Anyone have a lead on why Bush looked the way he did?

Bottom line: President Bush did not convince me we need a bailout. And he did not convince me his proposed bailout or a reasonable facsimile thereof is the right approach.

If we are going to be asked to invest $700 billion, where is the upside? The president offered none.

He proposes to buy about 5% of the bad debt being held by some institutions. What about the other 95%? That appears to be good debt. Ninety-five percent good isn't bad. In any economy.

What about the big guys? Warren Buffet has already locked in almost a half billion-dollar profit on his latest Wall Street investment. He gets a 10% interest rate and equity kickers. What do we get for providing what Buffet calls the foundation capital? Nothing.

Excessive executive salaries? I guess Bush caved on this one. I hope. Let me see the fine print. So far there is none.

Supervision of any government fund? No one has produced any draft of a proposed law that imposes stringent review both on "The Begging Bankers" and the government bureaucrats who are going to manage the public's $700 billion "asset."

What makes me really suspicious is that the same people who broke the United States are now bidding to manage the $700 billion pool of assets. I believe any law should mandate that no firm that was responsible in any way for the losses, or has received any assistance, can bid for any role in the management or supervision of the $700 billion bailout fund. Why should the people who got a "cut" when they were cutting our throats, now get a "cut" for supposedly sewing us up again? That's not right.

Treasury Secretary Paulsen has suggested the bailout is not fair, but that we still need to proceed. Respectfully, I dissent. If it isn't fair, we should not be taking on the burdens of the bailout.

Once again in his presidency, President Bush may have been misinformed. He painted a bleak picture Wednesday night of factories closing, Main Street disasters, a dark and dreary economy if we don't bailout Wall Street. Supposedly no one can borrow to buy a car, buy a house, blah, blah, blah. That's just not true. It is true that borrowing standards have been raised; that's all to the good. People have learned to be impatient about demanding possessions. Now they can afford to wait. Just ask Fox News' Bill O'Reilly.

Lehman Brothers went bust just over a week ago. Thousands of jobs have been saved already. New buyers have come in and salvaged the value that was left by the former owners. The entire process has been orderly. And fair. The old management is largely gone. And all of this was accomplished without a penny of bailout assistance. Personally, I would have rescued Lehman in an ad hoc package, but I am not complaining about the way the federal government sat on its hands and allowed the market to act.

They say the market isn't working. Just tell that to the people who bought Lehman's assets. They're not complaining about the market not working.

All of us owe money to banks or financial institutions. October 1st? We have to make mortgage payments, car loan payments, credit card payments. Bush would have us believe that banks are taking in money, and not lending it out. Not true. But suppose he is right; suppose banks are sitting on all the cash that flows in every day from interest and principal payments. Aren’t those funds an immediate cash infusion? If the cash is not going out again, it is sitting in the vault. Nothing wrong with that. Stockholders will create pressure to lend soon enough. The market does work.

There is a complete inconsistency in what Bush and the hysteria merchants are saying about imminent chaos. If banks are getting money in every day, and not lending it, they are creating their own bailout fund. If they are lending out the money they receive in every day, they are earning new returns at higher market rates, and replenishing their capital. Remember, even the Cassandras say 95% of the loans are still solid. Again without any bailout.

When the history of this era is written, America will be seen to have been brought low by self-inflicted wounds and government-induced hysteria and incompetence. In early 2007, when I saw government officials attacking the sub-prime lending industry and destroying active companies, I asked myself "Why?" If even 10% of the loans were delinquent, 90% of the loans were not. Why topple an entire industry, throw tens of thousands of people out of work and panic the entire economy because loan losses were right where they should be on the sum-primes? But that is what Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke did.

By all means prosecute the crooks, but don't punish the innocent borrowers. After all, subprime borrowers would normally be expected to generate higher losses. You don't need an econometric model to understand that basic fact. But 90% of the borrowers were living in their homes. And paying their mortgages. Government attacked. Federal regulators created panic where there was no basis to do so. And so we are living through a self-inflicted financial crisis of government incompetence and mismanagement. Now the people that created the unnecessary disaster have given us 96 hours to accept their latest solution.

Since early 2007 the hysteria has been fed by government bureaucrats seeking to pull the financial reins too tight and all at once. People are no different than horses. They say Ben Bernanke is a financial genius. I wish he had 1/10th of my real world financial experience. I tried a lawsuit at the Federal Reserve Board 35 years ago, so I know a little about the place. If you ask me, Bernanke is an idiot. If you pull too tight, too soon, without any warning, you get a reaction. And we are. But it is all unnecessary.

I worked in a bank while I was a law student. I was a part-time assistant in the installment loan department, when such departments existed. I started as bill collector. I was taught how to collect, and later how to lend. We went out repossessing cars, property, etc. I learned when to yank a borrower's assets, and when to work with them to salvage a credit. My immediate supervisor was a crook, which helped. You can get a lot of real world experience from underhanded people. I learned what to do as well as what not to do.

I also worked in bank acquisitions. I can tell you, banks that take in money and don’t lend money will go out of business. So Bush's threat that bankers will not lend without a bailout is sheer nonsense.

I also have a lot of practical experience in the financial world, not to mention having bought my first shares of stock over 50 years ago (even though I'm only 39).

And I am totally unconvinced by President Bush's Bailout.

No wonder the politicians in Washington are scared to vote for Bush's proposal. I would be terrified. The Bush Bailout could turn into a Republican Candidates' Self-Destruction Program.

But, hey, that's why we call this Internet newspaper "Contrarian" Commentary. Lawyer, economist and law school bill collector. I have done most all of it, and I speak from Main Street experience, not the lofty heights of Washington tax-exempt think tanks or a lifetime working on Capitol Hill.

As for Senator John McCain's latest approach, it goes against my advice. Other than that, I can't say. I said yesterday that McCain should use convert his latest "liability" into his greatest opportunity and separate himself from the Bush administration. McCain should simply say "no" to the bailout. McCain has chosen to go in the opposite direction. With twenty-four hours of hindsight, and after listening to Bush's speech, I think my advice to McCain makes a lot more sense than the approach he is pursuing. We'll just have to wait and see who is right.

ANDY TAKES COMMAND AND LAYS OUT MCCAIN'S ROAD TO VICTORY

(NEW YORK)(September 24, 2008) During the summer I told a number of groups that the only way Senator John McCain could win was to pick a woman for vice president. McCain was listening to me. He chose Sister Sarah and, until last week, he was on track to win. Until the phony Wall Street crisis erupted, that is.

A new Washington Post poll now shows Barack Obama opening up a decisive lead based on the amazing belief that Obama is more competent to manage the economy. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/23/AR2008092303667.html?hpid=topnews

Obama, who has never managed anything without "mad bomber" William Ayers at his side, is not even competent to impose his own socialist worldview on the American economy. If the economy is bad now, it will be much worse under an Obama maladministration.

But how does McCain counteract the pro-Obama media hysteria over the economy?

He must speak clearly and simply and directly: he must announce in no uncertain terms his total opposition to the Wall Street bailout.

First, over the past year I have repeatedly pointed out that the current financial crisis is a "manufactured" crisis. The urgency was created by maladroit steps to rein in sub-prime mortgages when they posed no threat to the overall economy. One bad step led to another. We have rather clumsily managed to topple our own financial dominoes. The mess is Wall Street's fault, not George Bush's responsibility.

Second, a "crisis" of "faith" or "confidence" is by definition a false crisis. Faith and confidence are tropes for escapism and exaggeration or even manipulation. Omaha investor Warren Buffet, who is a legendary bottom fisher on Wall Street, is investing $5 billion in Goldman Sachs. Is he investing to receive the sub-par return that many have predicted Goldman will earn now that the firm has become a federally regulated bank holding company? Doubtful. Buffet knows that panics by definition lead to excesses, and excesses lead to opportunities.

The liquidation of Lehman Brothers is being handled on an orderly basis. Buyers are there to invest in the firm.

Third, McCain and his staff have to realize and admit that Obama has made some cautious but sensible statements. Obama opposes golden parachutes, supports financial incentives to small taxpayers as part of any bailout, and supports extensive bipartisan oversight instead of the blank check requested by the treasury secretary. Obama is playing classic ball control now that our national misfortune has rebounded to his political advantage.

Fourth, although McCain has made one TV commercial linking Obama to Frank Raines, the former Fannie Mae head, this is not a time for token spots to be used as talking points by the cable TV bobbleheads. McCain has to relentlessly hammer the fact that Obama has been in bed with the very people that orchestrated the financial collapse and who were the captains of greed on Wall Street. Ad after ad after ad. McCain has to base his entire campaign on exposing the perfidiousness and conflicts between Obama's professed economic policies and the political realities of his fund-raising operation.

The timing of this "crisis" of "faith" and "confidence" is almost enough to make you wonder if Obama's supporters on Wall Street manufactured the meltdown on the eve of the election to help elect their man. Why a crisis now?

McCain needs to attack Obama on the cash Obama received from Wall Streeters and Fannie Mae. McCain has made thrusts in this direction, but from now on he has to focus his entire campaign on exposing Obama as the man who was Wall Street's favorite before the "collapse," and is still the man Wall Street wants to win. Why has Wall Street been so consistently behind Obama? Why indeed?

Next, McCain must play the female card. And play it to win. Sallie Krawcheck was just pushed out at Citigroup ("The Citi never sleeps") because she favored more protection for customers and less protection for bankers and brokers. Make her a heroine. Make her a parable for the greed and irredentist arrogance on Wall Street. "They still haven't learned their lesson," McCain should bellow at Wall Street and Broadway. "They dumped Krawcheck because she wanted to protect the public. And they want us to bail them out? No way!"

Tell people that "one courageous woman is worth a Wall Street of Gordon Gekkos." Play the sex card. Play it hard. The women will love it. Krawchek was the most prominent woman left on Wall Street, and she was unceremoniously dumped because she favored protecting investors. These banker bastards still want to screw the public. They screwed Krawcheck. And we want the American people to bail them out? Remember Krawchek and Just Say No.

If you think the Palin card worked, the Krawcheck card will dynamite Obama the same way. Maybe more so. The last thing Obama & Company are expecting from you—given your unsteady responses over the past week--is a bold counterattack with a woman at the fore. Krawchek front and center. Attack. The brave woman against the greedy men. I love it.

Just listen to Andy, and we'll win this one for the Gipper. We military guys have to stick together. No one ever won a battle with half measures; no one ever won an election on defense. Krawchek front and center. Attack.

Finally, McCain has to reduce the "crisis" issue to a sound bite: "Just say no to the Wall Street bailout." This is not a time for subtlety or ambiguity or professorial rumination. This is a time for clarity.

I was trained as an economist at the University of Illinois. One thing economists do when faced with unattractive options is to balance which choice will impose the least burden on the economy (or taxpayers, or whomever is the focus of concern). You look at the risks on each side, and try to see which way the scale tips. In my opinion, taking more risks with Wall Street is less risky than giving Wall Street a blank check to subsidize past excesses. The fact that Buffet is buying $5 billion of Goldman stock and there were plenty of buyers for Lehman's assets shows there is money on Wall Street to bail out Wall Street. Taxpayers not needed.

Clearly, the federal government faces unattractive options. But the current bailout proposal favors the rich and disadvantages working families. Bankers and brokers would be rewarded, without significant punishment for their atrocious greed; working people who are struggling would get virtually nothing. Obama sees this opening, which is why he is asking that relief for families in distress be part of any package. But, as usual, Obama is afraid to be bold. Basketball player that he is, Obama feels he is in the lead and he should go into a "stall" and protect that lead.

The only way to beat the stall in basketball is to steal the ball. It is not enough for McCain to match Obama with incremental improvements in the proposed bailout bill (more oversight, no golden parachutes, more this, more that, more technicalities and legislative minutiae).

McCain needs to be bold and decisive and break with the Bush administration. McCain must turn his biggest liability into his greatest opportunity.

McCain needs to say that we must not tax ordinary Americans to preserve extreme wealth and privilege for a handful of top executives and financial operators. "Wall Street should suffer so that Main Street can survive," McCain can state. "Main Street should not suffer so Wall Street can survive."

Next, it is essential to realize that the protective steps that were taken in the past, starting with last year's overreaction to the sub-prime situation, and culminating in this year's Bear Stearns takeover, failed. Why should we believe Treasury Secretary Paulsen now, when he has been consistently wrong in the past? Merely throwing bailout billions at Goldman Sachs' favored clients (Treasury Secretary Paulsen is a former Goldman chief) will not end the crisis or restore confidence. Pain will be suffered.

The question is whether we inflict pain on the privileged or on the powerless. McCain must say that if someone has to endure pain, it should be the privileged, not the powerless. Warren Buffet has billions more to invest where his opening $5 billion came from. Let him take the risk, not the little people.

"I speak for the American people," McCain should say, "Not Wall Street, not brokers, not bankers, and certainly not the malefactors of great wealth who have been exposed as confidence men without confidence in their own machinations."

Only if McCain takes command can he win. If he goes half way and meets Obama half way, McCain cannot overcome the natural advantage that flows not from Obama's assets but rather from McCain' s liabilities as the representative of a party that is unfairly blamed for the mess on Wall Street. McCain has to make clear that the Wall Street scandals were a bipartisan whorehouse, and that Obama was in skivvies when the roof collapsed. KRISTOF'S AGITPROP SEEKS TO ATTACK AMERICANS FOR ASKING LEGITIMATE QUESTIONS ABOUT OBAMA'S RELIGION THAT THE CANDIDATE HAS DESPERATELY TRIED TO CONCEAL

(NEW YORK)(September 22, 2008) Four years ago I wrote the first worldwide column exposing Barack Obama as a liar and exposing his family's Muslim heritage. My initial column is still one of the most Googled references on the Internet. My columns eventually culminated in a bestselling book: Obama: the Man Behind the Mask (http://OrangeStatePress.com). Although I was the first to use the "mask" analogy in my original Psychological Profile of Barack Obama, that trope has been widely adopted. Competing authors have also copied the "mask" phraseology.

Yesterday, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof called me "sleazy" and "disgusting." I have news for Mr. Kristof: it is his writing that his sleazy and disgusting. His agitprop on behalf of Obama is a disgrace to journalism. At the risk of popularizing someone with whom I have had my differences, Sean Hannity of Fox News has said 2008 is the year when "journalism died in America." Here's another example, Sean.

Truth, facts and integrity have certainly died at the New York Times.

Mr. Kristof also accused me of being a closet racist who is using Obama's religion as a "proxy for racial prejudice." On the contrary, all I have ever done is, to use Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro's classic put down, hold Barack Obama to the same standard as a white man. To accuse me of being "profoundly un-American" because I have consistently published the truth about Obama is disgraceful behavior and an example of how far the extreme left will go to demonize my research. My original columns, of course, were the basis for other bestselling books as well as my own.

First, a comment about Mr. Obama's Christianity. Here I may owe my readers a small apology. I was prepared to give Barack Obama the benefit of the doubt that he was a "Christian" based on his attendance at Trinity United Church of Christ ("UCC"); that may have been a mistake on my part. I gave Obama the benefit of the doubt before the disks in the Trinity UCC gift shop became a worldwide scandal and we heard the racist ranting of Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

Frankly, I was shocked that at a church where a large portion of Chicago's African-American aristocracy worshiped, such vicious anti-white and anti-American propaganda would masquerade as "Christianity." Of course, today Trinity takes a "Who me?" attitude to this egregious history of racism and subversion. Apparently no one who is anyone in Chicago ever heard Reverend Wright preach except Oprah Winfrey, and she left.

Although Barack Obama calls himself a Christian, we do not know when he officially became one, and when he ended his flirtation with the Nation of Islam (another scoop which I released earlier this year). In my own Episcopal Church where I worship today, we keep detailed baptismal records.

Some years ago I lost my wallet and I had to reestablish my identity. I went back to the church where I was baptized, St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in New Britain, Connecticut. St George's still had my baptismal file in the church records. They gave me a copy. (I later joined my father's church, the Anglican [Episcopal] denomination).

I have no idea what the UCC maintains in the way of baptismal records, if any, but this I do know. We have never seen a baptismal certificate for Barack Obama and we do not have an actual date when he was baptized. Maybe Mr. Kristof can provide one. We have not seen a valid Obama birth certificate either. Maybe Kristof can provide that as well. Obama asks us to take his Christianity "on faith." I have no faith in Obama's integrity or truthfulness.

Barack Obama has the same rights as I do in this country. He is free to believe what he wants, and to worship where he wants, and no one can tell him otherwise. But the history of where he was baptized, and when, and what his parents and grandparents' religion was, are objective facts. (If you read my book you will find that Obama lies repeatedly and relentlessly about his family history, so the obfuscation over his Islamic heritage is part and parcel of his confused character and relentless concealment.)

The American people often trace family lineage back hundreds of years, which is why we have been told that Obama and Vice President Cheney are "cousins." Can we at least trace back Obama's religious traditions only two generations without being accused of bigotry? Don’t we have a right to do so without being demonized by the New York Times?

Now to the Muslim issue.

Obama's family history in the Muslim faith may be a large issue, as some believe, or it may be a very small issue, as others believe, or it may be a non-issue as liberals believe. But it is a legitimate topic of discussion and a bona fide area of scholarly research. The fact is, Obama has brutally attacked anyone who told the truth about his Muslim heritage, and relentlessly lied about his Islamic family.

I believe Obama has yet to face his own confused state of mind about his religious origins. Moreover, I believe that Americans are entitled to the truth, the full truth and nothing but the truth from Senator Obama; to date they have not received those disclosures. Issue? Non-issue? Each of us can draw our own conclusions once we have the undisputed facts. That is the way our society usually functions. Or as Dragnet's Sergeant Joe Friday would say, "Just the facts, ma'am."

Obama's mother married two, not one, Muslim men.

There does not appear to have been a mosque in Hawaii at the time when Obama's father lived there, so we do not know what he would have done had there been a Muslim facility.

We do know that Obama's stepfather occasionally took Obama and his sister to a mosque in Jakarta, Indonesia. We also know that Obama was registered as a Muslim at one of the schools he attended in Jakarta. There is no evidence—nor has Obama ever cited any-that his "atheistic" mother objected to his being classified as a Muslim while Barry (Barack) was living in Indonesia.

As I have stated before, there is nothing suspicious or unusual about parents choosing a religion for their children. Almost all parents choose the initial religion of their children, or no religion. My parents initially chose to have me baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church, which I attended and where I was a very devoted altar boy. Later as an adult I transferred my membership to the Episcopal Church of my father and grandfather. There is nothing secret about any of this, and I have nothing to hide. (One of my grandmothers was Roman Catholic.)

Some religions transfer their heritage through the mother. In Judaism, for example, the Jewish religious tradition is handed down through the mother. In the Muslim religion, however, which often tracks Judaism and Christianity, but not in this case, the father hands down the family's religion.

Thus, at birth, by virtue of Obama's Muslim father, Barack Obama, Junior received the same Islamic faith as his Kenyan father. The Kenyan wing of Obama's family is almost all Muslim. Even the woman Obama falsely calls his "granny" was quoted as stating she is a devoted Muslim. If everyone in your family is a Muslim, it is a fair conclusion that you began life as a Muslim. What is Mr. Kristof's problem with the foregoing facts?

Is there widespread confusion about Obama's religion? Indeed there is. Why is that? First, the fact Obama's father was a Muslim raises the obvious point that as a result of the tenets of some Muslims his son also began life as a Muslim.

Some months ago there was a dispute in the New York Times when another writer made my points, and the Times promptly produced Muslim scholars to oppose the patrilineal passage of Islam from a father to his children. There was also a dispute about whether the Islamic faith has a "Once a Muslim, always Muslim" doctrine. Indeed, Islam is no more monolithic a religion than Christianity. Sects, denominations and even nations disagree about the "true" nature of Islam. But the fact that Christians disagree does not convert their disagreements into a negation of Christianity. Likewise, the fact that some Muslims disagree with the "Once a Muslim, Always a Muslim" doctrine does not mean that hundreds of millions of Muslims do not follow that belief. They do. It's a fact. People have recently been threatened with death for announcing a desire to leave the Muslim religion.

The first time Obama left home, when he attended college at Occidental College in Los Angeles, he gravitated to a circle of Muslim friends. While this Muslim circle is nothing sinister, it is another small piece of circumstantial evidence concerning Obama's religious state of mind. Boy leaves home and heads straight for the Muslim community on campus. Well.

And how about this? I take a contrarian point of view on the Middle East where my columns have defended Islam and challenged American policy. As a result, I have many readers throughout the Islamic world. When I began to criticize Obama, some of my followers wrote me and said "Shhh. He's one of us." Thus, many Muslims believe Obama is a Muslim. That' a fact.

Obama could have avoided all of this confusion if he had simply told the truth years ago. For some reason Barack fears the truth. No one had had to "Otherize" him as Kristof suggests. Obama "Otherizes" himself. For the reasons stated in my Psychological Profile, Obama does not like to tell the truth. He has lived the better part of his life in a fantasy world, and it is into that fantasyland that he retreats when he must deal with confusion and confrontation. In "Obamaland," "Barry Obama" was never a Muslim.

Kristof says that people are interested in Obama's religious history because we are using religion as a "proxy" for racism. That is a despicable suggestion. I don't know about Kristof but I have a publicly documented lifetime of work on behalf of civil rights, and a worldwide reputation for standing by Islam and condemning religious demonization. The only bigot in the room is Kristof, because he seeks to use bigotry and a subterfuge for Obama's psychological confusion and evasion.

Kristof's final slander is to claim some false sense of honor because he contributed to the confusion over Obama's religious history. Kristof previously wrote about Obama's singing the Islamic call to prayer in Arabic. On Sunday, September 21st, Kristof tried to impeach himself. He claimed that Obama could remember this prayer because "the call to prayer blasts from mosque loudspeakers five times a day." I have lived in Muslim lands, and I would hasten to say that very little that originates with the muezzin can be heard at a distance. Obama must have lived very close to a mosque if he was able to decipher the call to prayer so clearly and after the passage of forty (40) years as Kristof now suggests.

Kristof closes his smears by accusing scholars/writers such as myself of "calculating to undermine the political process" and "magnifying the ugliest prejudices." On the contrary, it is Obama, who has repeatedly and relentlessly lied about his religious history, and fellow travelers such as Kristof, who are doing so much to undermine our democratic institutions by seeking to substitute a big lie for the truth in this election campaign.

I stand by my facts. And I stand by the truth. It would be nice if Kristof and Obama would do likewise.

The odor of the Third Reich which was increasingly enveloping Mr. Obama in July has turned to a stench in September. Barack Obama is bringing Hitler’s brown-shirted bully boys to American politics.

In its early days, Nazi Germany depended on a corps of violent louts to harass and intimidate anyone who spoke against the growing Nazism in Germany. Barack Obama, our scholar-in-residence in the presidential campaign, has learned the lessons of fascism well.

Where else can we look to similar examples of disaffected morons with too much money and too much time on their hands, haranguing and harassing society? Why to Billy Ayers’ Weather Underground of course. Why is it that Barack Obama seems to want to walk in William Ayers’ shoes, and to duplicate his loathsome attacks on society.

The latest Ayers trope that has morphed into the Obama campaign is telephone terrorism.

Presidential candidates do not bomb buildings. At least not yet anyway.

But Obama has come up with a new tactic: unleash his brown-shirted bully boys on anyone in the media who dares to allow an Obama opponent on the air. As the author of the most respected book on Obama, this wave of neo-Nazi intimidation is of vital concern to me.

How do you say “Obama Action Wire” in German?

Obama floods phone wires with idiots who have no idea what the subject is, except they are supposed to defend their “Perfect Master.’ He floods caller lines so that legitimate callers can’t get through. Obama has created telephone terrorism as his latest campaign tactic. Where is that Axelrod boy when we need him? I knew Axelrod 30 years ago when he still worked for a living.

Although I live in Chicago, I was never bamboozled by Barack the Entertainer. I knew in 2004 he was a fraud and charlatan. My book Obama: The Man Behind The Mask (http://OrangeStatePress.com) documents the detective story of how I began to unearth the truth about Obama, piece-by-piece, a truth he has buried deep below the surface. I am still learning.

I did not begin by believing that Obama would become the living embodiment of a new Furhur, with his own “Air Obama” (no American flag on the tail) or “Great Seal of Obama (why wait to be president before you display your own seal?) But Obama’s megalomaniacal pretensions now bring with them a new corps of Brown Shirts (http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/GERsa.htm) to do his bidding. I am increasingly concerned.

It is obvious that anyone in the media who wants to air an Obama critic will pause to consider the risks of having phone lines bombarded with threats and intimidation, and worse. Ayers is out there, still walking the streets, claiming he “didn’t bomb enough” in his younger days. What are they teaching at their “Camp Obamas?” I’ll bet that behind the scenes Billy Ayers is in charge of the curriculum; after all, he’s Obama’s “education” professor, isn’t he. They spent $150 million together cleaning up Chicago’s schools (“Show me the money?” Now where did I hear that?).

Free speech does not disappear in a day; it disappears dollop by dollop. Day-by-day. Authoritarianism and totalitarianism will come hand-in-glove with Obama’s election.

If you still needed a reason to vote for John McCain, you have it.

And so, my Dear Democrats, now that you have your new little Furhur, what are you going to do with him? More importantly, what is he going to do to you? Or do to us? He has millions of disaffected baby brown shirts waiting to be unleashed at the snap of the master’s fingers. Telephone terrorism may only be the first step. How long before the Obamabots are goose-stepping down Pennsylvania Avenue?

Hugo Chavez?

Or does Barack Obama say it all?

I hear my phone ringing. Maybe it’s Obama’s baby brown shirts calling.

(NEW YORK, NY)(September 17, 2008) Barack Obama simply does not understand American capitalism. John McCain does. Barack Obama has spent his entire adult life marinating himself in economic defeatism and elitism. John McCain has made decisions; Barack Obama has avoided deciding.

McCain understands the power of American capitalism. Obama disdains it.

For Obama to say we face the worst economy since 1929 is despicable and ridiculous. Only his mainstream media chorale would echo such self-defeatism. In 1932 there was 25% unemployment. Today unemployment is 6%. In 1929, stockbrokers were selling apples on the street. Today immigrants run fruit stands on the street. Year-round. Then, people jumped out of windows. Has anyone jumped out of a window in the last week?

Obama accuses McCain of being stupid on the economy because McCain once made a stupid offhanded remark and said he didn’t understand the economy very well.

Here are the facts:

America’s economy is owned by the American people. (A tip of the hat to Ross Perot for his “ownership” mantra). We worked for it, we built it and we own it. We welcome foreign investors, and indeed they are good for us. But, ultimately, our economy is ours.

Second, as both Obama and McCain recognize, we face challenging times. “The City” in London is a strong challenger for Wall Street’s primacy in financial matters. Foreign manufacturers have come to the United States and produced better products at lower costs. China, India and the Middle East are accumulating wealth and want heightened respect commensurate with the growing strength of their economies. They are a challenge.

And both Democrats and Republicans—the mandarin class that despises John McCain and that he in turn disdains--have done nothing to create energy independence through a massive “Manhattan Project”-style national effort. A primitive economy created the atom bomb in three years (1942-45). In over thirty years (1973-2008) we have been unable to solve our detrimental dependence on imported oil. Who votes for these losers? A show of hands, please.

The solutions to all of our challenges today require two essential components: a leader who will make decisions, and a leadership team that is not afraid to take decisive, not to say brutal, action. The power of American capitalism that makes us the wealthiest nation in history is our willingness to bring the malefactors of great wealth into the abattoir, and dismember them. Yes, there is blood on the floor. But at the end of the day the blood will be washed away and tomorrow morning America will reopen for business with a clean balance sheet. The bad assets will have been “marked to market” and sent away to the rendering plant.

Twenty years ago Japan faced a property bubble not unlike our current problems. Simultaneously we faced a 1980’s savings and loan crisis brought on by bad lending practices and corruption. The American people authorized their government to chop away at the bad assets. In a few years the Resolution Trust Company (“RTC”) was out of business, the bad assets having been recovered and restored. Property values began to rise again and we launched on a new boom. In Japan, by comparison, economic leaders were afraid to take decisive action and the lingering effects of the bust went on for over a decade.

Today, the world economy faces similar challenges. The property bubble does not exist only in Florida and Nevada; there are similar booms and bubbles across the globe, from China to Europe and in between. The world economy is slowing, partly because of financial excesses and partly because of an unexpected oil price spike. But many foreign leaders and foreign economic managers will be reluctant to take immediate, decisive, brutal action. Welcome to Wall Street.

I have been critical of the way the so-called “sub-prime” mortgage situation was handled beginning last year and, frankly, I believe that government made a tolerable situation intolerably worse. We are still paying the price for the poor forward thinking that triggered a “crisis” out of the sub-prime “challenge.”

But when people blunder on Wall Street, the American people’s “terrible swift sword,” Samurai-style, falls on them. Lehman Brothers? The firm now belongs to history. In weeks the bankruptcy lawyers will be tearing apart the few remaining bones. A judge will supervise the dismemberment. It will be a quick slice and dice operation. Lehman will not linger. The firm will have been cut up and devoured by the survivors. No taxpayer dollars involved.

Merrill Lynch. I feel the sale to Bank of America is a bad one. But I am not confident of being able to stop the acquisition, although I will try. Merrill Lynch was mismanaged. Someone new will get a chance to make mistakes. No taxpayer dollars involved.

American International Group (AIG)? This firm was indeed “too large to fail,” and so it was taken over by the government. Uh, that means us. But we took 80% of the company’s stock in return. That’s no incentive for a business to ask for a government bail-out.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? Fannie/Freddie’s greedy managers and influence peddlers? Toast. Mortgage lending? The market will return after the bad assets are “marked to market.” Distressed assets provide a lucrative opportunity today for patient investors willing to risk their capital. That’s the American way. Mark to market, and move on.

Now please don’t get me wrong. I do not encourage or endorse weekend deal making as the preferred approach to running the economy. But I do wholeheartedly support decision-making.

And I do not support selling short the American people or their collective economic wealth which we call “the economy.” When Obama says we are in a mess, he only reflects his own confusion and impotence, not our own. Tomorrow morning, most of us will get up and go to work, 94% of us. Lehman, Merrill, AIG? Done and gone. It’s sad, and I’m sorry, but they took risks, and they paid for their errors and excesses. The abattoir works. The floors will be clean in the morning.

I do not minimize the challenges of unemployment or economic risks. If you are without a job, the unemployment rate is not 6%, it is 100%. But our economy is absorbing workers even as Wall Street deal minders are seeking new horizons.

Obama? Frankly, I don’t think he likes us very much, even though he would very much like to rule us.

McCain? He is one of us. When decisions have to be made, he will make them. But he will do with a consistent attitude: confidence in the American people and faith in their productivity and industry.

Is our economy fundamentally sound as John McCain suggests? Well, let me answer a question with a question: are the American people fundamentally sound?

Do you want to invest in a man who believes in the fundamental soundness of the American people, or invest in a man who has spent his life depreciating America and all we stand for? This time, it’s not “You the judge.” It’s, “You be the investor.”

Whom do you trust with your money? McCain or Obama?

Invest wisely. It’s your economy. And your future.

Now decide.

“Basically, government has created this hysteria, and the hysteria is feeding on itself. The American people deserve better from their leaders.

“I am hopeful that Senator John McCain will also condemn secret meetings and weekend deals as a way to restructure our financial markets.

“My experience with Bank of America is that customer service is sloppy; you can never get them to respond or resolve anything. They are overextended. This year they have tried to digest the nation's largest mortgage lender, Countrywide. Now the nation's biggest brokerage network? What ‘management’ do they bring to the table that Merrill Lynch or Lehman Brothers did not already possess?

“Bank of America also charges consumers and small businesses the highest prices. In most cities, many banks offer ‘free business checking.’ Bank of America charges a minimum of $15 a month for the same service. Their size has not introduced economies of scale to benefit the public. On the contrary, based on my own experience with poor customer service, their scale has created diseconomies of scale. I find their branch staff rude and unresponsive and their toll-free staff equally unresponsive.

“Their management is stretched too thin. They just took over LaSalle Bank in Chicago. It is obvious they will be bleeding Chicago depositors and businesses to feed their national aspirations. Chicago should not have to suffer so that BkofA executives can get bigger and bigger, until they too eventually go bust. I don’t think these BkofA wheelers dealers should be allowed to deplete the Midwest to finance excessive economic concentration elsewhere.

“On the contrary, increasing concentration of our financial industry is something to be avoided.

“We began the year with the world's soundest financial system and markets. Now we are creating chaos and turning over billions in profits to short sellers and speculators such as George Soros. Is this sound public policy? I think not. Incompetence is destroying our economy and our financial services industry. This must stop.

“Should we be restructuring our economy in secret weekend meetings? Should we be devastating the economy of the City of New York, which will then cause ongoing financial chaos and disruption for tens of millions? I don’t think so. No one is thinking beyond Monday morning, and that is sheerer mismanagement and incompetence.

“The shenanigans in which Bank of America seeks to grab a major financial institution from its shareholders will do incalculable damage to the economies of New York State, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as the national economy. No one is looking at what my law school dean used to call ‘the big picture.’ Well I see the big picture and I don’t like it. No one should like it. Republicans should oppose it.

“Government-stimulated hysteria is talking down and taking down our financial system. It’s crazy. My late boss, Senator Paul Douglas, who authored our bank holding company laws, would be shaking his head in disgust at what is happening. Where is Congress? Who is standing up and speaking up for the consumer and investor in all of these backdoor manipulations?

“Nevertheless, because regulatory approval is required, I will formally announce Monday afternoon that I will launch efforts to see that approval is denied, and that Bank of America is not permitted to use its current incompetence to acquire additional control of our economy. This deal would bring higher and higher costs to investors and consumers. It is anti-competitive and anti-consumer,” Martin will state.

"I don't know if the Sean and Frank Show is archived, but I am convinced that talk radio is beginning to understand the significance of my ongoing research, and the significance of my book Obama: The Man behind the Mask," Martin said. "We are ramping up our analysis and coverage of Ayers-Obama.

"There has been a great deal of confusion over whether the mainstream media could throw the election to Obama. Certainly the biased interrogation of Governor Sarah Palin is a sign of media desperation. I lived in Baghdad, and I have been immersed in Middle East policy, and I would have a hard time defining the nuances of the 'Bush Doctrine.' Palin showed she had a good grasp of the overall strategy and policy; nomenclature is peripheral. I'm not sure Bush himself could explain what the 'Bush Doctrine' was. Anyway.

"It's clear to me that the critical 'undecided' segment of the voting population has tuned out the mainstream media and will base its voting decision on what the Internet provides in the way of insight and information. Under the radar of mainstream publications and stations our reach and frequency are growing exponentially. Nevertheless, on November 5th it will become clear: The Internet Rules," said Martin.

WHY THE SECRECY ABOUT OBAMA'S COLLEGE RECORDS?

(NEW YORK, NY)(September 12, 2008) Barack Obama had the wrong calling. Instead of being a "community organizer" he should have joined the CIA. Obama knows how to cover his tracks. He could be called the "clandestine candidate."

Obama spent two years at Columbia University yet left virtually no fingerprints of his presence there. Could that be because Columbia was where Mr. Obama first met "mad bomber" William Ayers?

Obama has also refused to release his Columbia University transcripts. What secrets lurk there? Likewise for Occidental College where he attended for two years. What is he trying to hide? I arrived in the Columbia area to study theology at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine shortly after Obama had left, so I know the neighborhood well. I have gone back to retrace were he might have been. No luck. No footprints, either.

What has Obama's past behavior over the past four years taught me? When Obama is hiding something he is hiding something.

Is it just a coincidence that Obama and Ayers were on the Columbia campus together? Did they meet and make their initial contact at that time? Had Obama been turned on to Ayers by Frank Marshall Davis? Was there a Khalid Al-Mansour and William Ayers connection during this early period. Questions, questions. But no answers from Mr. Obama.

Did Ayers point Obama in the direction of Chicago as a place to hone Obama's "organizing" skills?

They had no luck either.

The fact that Obama has created a void concerning his college years, after claiming in his own book he went to New York to study in an urban environment, makes me queasy. Did he find what he was looking for in New York? What did he find? Who did he find? Blank.

What is Obama hiding?

No major party nominee for the presidency has led a life with, pardon the expression, black holes at crucial points in his life. Why was Obama invisible at Columbia? What would his college transcripts show? Why are the mainstream media tiptoeing away from any searching examination of Obama's college years?

The Wall Street Journal speculated that Obama is concealing that he received racial preferences and obtained his degree through affirmative action. Why wouldn’t Obama want to put that theory to rest by releasing his college records?

While the Journal's theory is as equally plausible as mine, I believe Obama is concealing that he had his first contacts with William Ayers while both were living in the Columbia neighborhood. Ayers had recently surfaced after having been "underground" for a decade.

No one has been able to nail down when Obama met Ayers. My 2.0 timeline leaves the matter open (see below). There is no hard evidence. The only concrete information we have is that Obama has blatantly and repeatedly lied about the timeline of his relationship with Ayers.

Deception of Obama's sort is probative in and of itself. The fact that he lies, lies repeatedly and lies blatantly, is indicative of the sensitivity of the Obama-Ayers connection.

While Obama's minions obviously want to vet Sarah Palin's past, he has precluded any vetting of his own peculiar history. He claims in his own words that he went to Columbia to find a black experience, and then says virtually nothing about those experiences.

Eight years ago, I made a very controversial TV commercial that aired on Channel 9 in New Hampshire, questioning George Bush's qualifications for the presidency. My words then resonate now. I said, "Don’t trust George Bush with your vote until he trusts you with the truth about his past." The same words can be applied to Obama. Eight years later, my words have found a new target, and a new void.

In the meantime, did Barack Obama meet William Ayers in New York? It sure looks that way from all of the secrecy surrounding Obama's Columbia years.

(NEW YORK, NY)(September 9, 2008) Nailing down the relationship between "mad bomber" William Ayers and Barack Obama has been the greatest challenge of the 2008 presidential campaign.

The second biggest challenge of 2008 has been deciphering and understanding Barack Obama's campaign structure. His campaign is unlike any other presidential campaign in U. S. history. Obama's operation is authoritarian, disciplined and centralized in Chicago. Obama's reliance on a nationwide network of local "offices" and mailing lists points inexorably to a political latticework straight out of William Ayers' revolutionary playbook.

The bottom line: After an exhaustive investigation ContrarianCommentary.com can confirm that Barack Obama appears to be William Ayers' "front" for a national, ongoing Maoist-style revolutionary campaign structure which will endure past November 4th.

Ironically, as we searched for the Ayers-Obama relationship in the present, it was staring us in the face: Obama's campaign is structured precisely the way Ayers would want. That is why Obama has created "Camp Obamas" across the United States to indoctrinate workers, and adopted other similar Fidel Castro/Hugo Chavez tactics.

The puzzle pieces are finally starting to fall into place. Last week we asked why would Black Panther party revolutionary Khalid Al-Mansour start soliciting money for Obama's legal education? The answer: Ayers and his wife, Bernadine Dohrn, were close associates of the Black Panther Party and even unleashed a terrorist attack on a New York judge who heard a Panther case.

In the 1980's, the Ayers/Dohrn revolutionary terror network was still working through individuals such as Al-Mansour, who had sufficiently laundered his radical past to assume respectability as a front for a Saudi Prince. The same way Ayers laundered his own past to become a professor of "education" at Illinois' taxpayer-subsidized university.

Ayers and Al-Mansour appear to have been in contact. Ayers vouched for Obama to Al-Mansour, who then began a law school fund-raising campaign among prominent African-Americans.

Obama's law degree thus appears to have been financed through the encouragement of persons who had been violent revolutionaries and remain unrepentant to this day, the same unconventional way the purchase of Obama's Chicago mansion was party financed by an Iraqi billionaire.

Why did Obama get hired as a "summer associate" in 1989 at the law firm which had hired Ayers' wife, and where Ayers' father was a prominent friend of the managing partner at Sidley & Austin? The answer is obvious. Ayers was grooming Obama as his future "front."

Where did Obama get his first and only legal job after Harvard? At a law firm where Tony Rezko was a prominent client and where name partner Judson Miner was a law school classmate of Bernadine Dohrn-Ayers. Yes, the pieces are starting to come together.

Was Obama telling ABC the truth when he said met the Ayers' at a coffee klatch at the Ayers home in 1995? Ayers had already been working with Obama for seven years; Ayers had appointed Obama to head a $50 million foundation. Did Ayers appoint a stranger? Or a front man? The answer is obvious.

Obama has relentlessly tried to conceal the Ayers/Obama time line, and the ongoing connections between the men. When bits and pieces of the Ayers/Obama relationship have popped up this year, Obama has sought to debunk and deflate each isolated piece of information. No one was able to grasp the big picture.

We always wondered why Obama had structured his campaign the way he did: small "offices" all across the United States. No other presidential campaign has ever done this. Due to childhood neglect and abuse, he is a man without a conscience. He was and remains the perfect front for Ayers' ongoing revolutionary campaign to subvert and subdue the United States of America.

It can be said without fear of contradiction, a vote for Barack Obama is in reality a vote to put William Ayers in de facto control of the U. S government.

William Ayers is an admittedly unrepentant violent revolutionary who waged war against every American and who today is still scheming to wage war against the United States. This time he wants his headquarters to be in the Oval Office of the White House.

William Ayers is the mastermind behind the rise to power of Barack Obama. He has been since 1988.

(NEW YORK, NY)(September 8, 2008) The Internet is alive with excerpts from a Sunday news show where Senator Barack Obama told George Stephanopoulos of ABC that Senator John McCain had not raised questions about "my Muslim faith." While undoubtedly a slip of the tongue, it is time to revisit the question of Obama's "faith." The past week has brought devastating disclosures for Obama.

The mainstream media have used coverage of the Republican National Convention as a pretext to ignore those disclosures.
Before we move on, two cautions or "caveats." I accept that Barack Obama is a Christian today. Christianity is the original big tent. He appears to meet the visible criteria for being a Christian. Second, there is nothing wrong with Islam.

In probing for Obama's candor or veracity about his religious history, I have no reason to demonize Islam. I am solely concerned by Obama's steadfast efforts to deny or erase his religious past and now, based on the Al-Mansour disclosures, his financial links to pro-Saudi, radical Black Nationalism. Ironically, many of the Islamic faith believe Obama is Islamic and are proud of that fact.

First, "faith" is a legitimate area of inquiry. No less that the "media elite" Washington Post now says so. http://newsweek.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/undergod/

Second, Obama has gone to great lengths to obscure or hide his religious history.

Four years ago, I was the first to publicize the fact that Obama came from a Muslim family with deep, active Muslim roots. Obama's book "Dreams From My Father" had alluded to his Muslim relatives but never focused in detail on his years in Indonesia, or addressed the conflicting views in Muslim theology. Some Muslim theologians believe "once a Muslim, always a Muslim." Others acknowledge that you can exit the religion. But, significantly, in Muslim countries where Islam is the state religion, many prohibit conversion or make it very difficult.

Since then both Obama and the effete elite have engaged in a massive fraud and disinformation campaign. The media elite publicized a "Fight the Smears" web site that Obama concocted to fight "smears" that he was a Muslim. He was a Muslim. That claim is not a smear or a lie. The newly disclosed Al-Mansour relationship reflects a reasonable probability that Obama was playing a "Muslim card" well into his twenties.

Second, although Obama has denied he was ever a Muslim, that denial is objectively untrue. The Associated Press provided a copy of Obama's school records where his parents registered him as a Muslim at a Jakarta school. Obama has a right to "explain" his religious registration, but we equally have a right to rely on the documentary record. People can freely choose which version to believe. He has no right to dictate the decision.

Third, Obamafascists and their fellow travelers in the media have tried to demonize me. I have been "exposed" by the extreme left as the leader of a "vast right-wing smear machine," when what I have done is conduct objective research and present solid facts. The "smear machine" exists in the media's imagination.

Truly, the question of Obama's "religious roots" has been a great detective story. The facts have emerged slowly, grudgingly, and only in disconnected bits and pieces. Last March I held a Washington, DC news conference to disclose Obama's links to the Nation of Islam. Only later did other media corroborate my research.

I have been investigating Obama's Islamic activity at Occidental College, his first year in College, but as yet have not presented a story. We try to be careful with the facts.

The biggest piece of circumstantial evidence in the "What is Obama's religious history?" story came last week, when Islamic convert, America-hater, Black Panther Party adviser, and Saudi royalty confidante Khalid Al-Mansour was disclosed to have raised money to pay for Obama's Harvard Law School education.

This is a truly bizarre fact. The newly disclosed Al-Mansour relationship is devastating to Obama. It could doom his candidacy. So once again, the mainstream media are burying the information.

The media claim they have a "First Amendment" right to report what they please. I agree. But what about the public's First Amendment "right" to receive fair, accurate, impartial and complete information about a presidential candidate? The Internet is growing because the mainstream media are a cesspool of manipulation, prevarication and outright lying about Barack Obama. The media have contempt for the American people. "Cover-up" does not begin to describe what is happening, as suppression of the Al-Mansour/Saudi/Obama connection confirms.

First, Al-Mansour has been characterized as an anti-American, Black Nationalist, Israel opponent and adviser to the Black Panther Party. What were Al-Mansour's original links to Obama? More importantly, did the Obama Al-Mansour connection extend from the 1980's into the present? You could well assume that someone who paid for your law school education would be someone with whom you stayed in close contact. Al-Mansour, anyone?

Secondly, why would Al-Mansour be soliciting money for Obama in the 1980's? Was Obama holding himself out as a Muslim to raise cash? What was the basis of Al-Mansour's interest in Obama? My hypothesis is that Obama portrayed himself, secretly, as a Muslim, to draw Al-Mansour's interest and financial support.

The fact that the radical, lunatic fringe of the African-American community was collecting law school money for Obama tells you inescapably that Al-Mansour saw Obama as a "person of interest." The fact that Saudi money was behind this America-hater (Al-Mansour) fits closely with the entire pattern of radical connections in Obama's life. Saudis have a history of subsidizing radical Islam. But they just don’t pass out cash on street corners. They have an agenda.

The mainstream media can pretend the Al-Mansour facts do not exist, but they do. The mainstream media can try to ignore the legitimate questions that flow from the bizarre linkage of Al-Mansour and Obama in the 1980's, but those questions remain.

The American people have a right to ask whether Obama's financial angel, Al-Mansour, who is a Saudi Arabian representative, has established a Saudi-Obama connection.

The fact that Obama, an obscure college student, was linked to an allegedly anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-White supporter is a staggering cloud on his fitness to serve as president. It is more. It is a disqualification.

John McCain may not want to raise these issues; that is his privilege. But I have been collecting, analyzing and presenting the unbelievable-but-true facts about Obama for the past four years. I am nevertheless astounded by the new Al-Mansour disclosures.

Al-Mansour and Obama: what did Obama know about Al-Mansour, and when did he know it? How much cash did Al-Mansour raise for Obama's legal education? What else has Al-Mansour done for Obama? "Just the facts," Mr. Obama. Just the truth. For a change.

Mainstream media can't be allowed to run from the truth about Obama.

OBAMA AUTHOR ANDY MARTIN ON SARAH PALIN'S "CHECKERS SPEECH"

(NEW YORK, NY)(REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION)(September 4, 2008) Fifty-six years ago in September 1952, the Republican Party faced a challenge. The national convention had nominated Senator Richard Nixon for vice president. Questions were then raised about Nixon's finances. Nixon went on national television and salvaged his candidacy. But he stated that he would not return the gift of a small dog his daughters had named "Checkers." Nixon's defense became known as his Checkers Speech. He won the election.

Wednesday night Sarah Palin gave what amounted to a close approximation of a Checkers Speech.

Palin was nominated only a few days ago. Within hours, Democratic Party mud merchants began besmirching Palin. The media created a typical feeding frenzy. Palin was under intense pressure to deliver an acceptance speech that would respond to her inquisitors. She passed with flying colors.

The "case" against Plain rests on several illusory pillars.

First, Palin's Oprahesque "family situation" has been questioned. The family was there, together, Wednesday night and they were welcomed by Senator McCain. The issue of Palin's children has become so volatile that even Democratic women are now denying any role in raising questions. Left-wing South Florida Democrat Deborah Schultz steadfastly denied any basis to question Palin's role as a mother. A Democratic chorus on the Larry King show agreed. End of issue.

The second question arises out of Palin's views on social issues. She will undoubtedly be questioned on her prior assertions. Many will agree with her, and many will disagree with her. Her views on social issues are no basis to disqualify her from the vice presidency. Voters decide this one.

The third question arises out of Palin's qualifications. Here, both the media and Democrats have ignored what has always been in plain view. Palin graduated from a university with a degree in broadcasting and communications. She began her working career as a TV reporter. She is someone who has been in front of the camera and familiar with the camera for decades. Palin was clearly underestimated. Except by McCain and I.

Palin loves the camera, and the camera loves her. That's a natural talent. She will be a formidable TV presence.

Palin's experience is sufficient to pass the test for second-in-command. She is an elected governor.

Palin's views on specific issues are going to be reviewed. But here the case gets weak to the point of dissolving and borders on nitpicking. Palin may have voiced support for the infamous "bridge to nowhere" before she became governor. So what? People's views as candidates and incumbents often diverge.

There is no denying Palin sold off the state plane and fired the governor's private chef. Those were real decisions. They were made at a time when only the people of Alaska were looking. They do reflect an attitude of reform and economy.

Finally, there is the sex issue. Will she become the first woman to hold national office? I believe she will. Democrats are in a tizzy because they claim she won’t get all of Hillary Clinton's voters. Indeed she won't. But there are millions of Democrats that will vote for Palin in protest for what was done to Clinton. In what everyone agrees will be a close race the Clinton switchers could decide the election.

Women want to see a woman in national office. As I predicted, the first woman in national office, as well as the first African-American, will be Republicans.

Democrats may have become victims of their own success. They predict they will attain or come close to a "cloture-proof" majority in the senate (60 votes). I think it is too early to predict individual state elections. But as long as voters believe that Democrats will maintain or increase their control of congress, many voters will feel comfortable voting for McCain-Palin even though these voters vehemently disagree with the Republican Party on social issues such as abortion. Indeed, a McCain-Palin victory should not be seen as endorsement of conservative social issues. This team will win in spite of their views. Of course, if they do win, even without much in the way of coattails they may stem any Democratic tide at the Senate and House level.

The Republican "base" is being whipped up into a frenzy over Palin. A true social conservative has been nominated. There has been so much "red meat" flying the past two days the USDA should be alerted. Those who believe that social issues count, and those who discount the important of social issues with a Democratic congress, may combine in a perfect storm to elect McCain-Palin. Unbelievable. But true.

Howard Fineman of MSNBC and Newsweek called Palin a "dangerous heat-seeking missile" aimed at the Democrats. He is right. Keith Olbermann looked as though he and his trulove Rachel Maddow were contemplating a suicide pact.

A point of personal privilege. I have been writing about John McCain "the fighter pilot." People may have wondered what I was harping on. Read my old columns. Now you know. Johnny Mac has killer instincts. It looks to me as Barack Obama will soon have time to write his third "autobiography." He won't have to worry about moving to the White House.

Rudy Giuliani gave a fine speech as a warm-up to Palin. Giuliani looks to be a candidate for Attorney General in a McCain administration.

The bottom line: last Friday I predicted the election was effectively over. After Wednesday night I am convinced I was correct. Save this column and read it on November 6th.

It must be galling to the Democrats that the only ticket with a union member in the family is the Palin's, and that Republicans are going to win the race to elect the first woman.

As I wrote last week from Denver, Obama is and was timid. I know Barry O the same way I know Johnny Mac. McCain is bold. No one would call Palin a fading violet either. The rest, as they say, is "history." Fifty-six years after Richard Nixon gave the first Checkers speech, another Republican has electrified the nation, and possibly electrocuted the liberal media, with a new age Checkers Speech.

MCCAIN CONVENTION WILL OVERSHADOW "NO DRAMA OBAMA"

JOE LIEBERMAN SPEECH IS CRUCIAL TO MCCAIN'S STRATEGY

ARRIVAL OF PALIN'S PROSPECTIVE SON-IN-LAW ADDS AN OPRAHESQUE TONE

(NEW YORK, NY)(REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION)(September 2, 2008) After Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Palin the Republican National Convention reopens this evening with a reconfigured schedule. Nevertheless, one thing is clear: This is not your father's GOP. The GOP that John McCain is building is something quite different. Maybe that why John McCain is the only Republican that could bring his party to the brink of victory in November. And maybe victory. The only one. No wonder he drives the cable TV bobbleheads batty.

Barack Obama likes to be known as "No Drama Obama." All the thespian (can I say that?) juices are concentrated in St. Paul. "No Drama" is now in a battle with "Big Drama." Big John.

First, McCain himself is something of a Phoenix. He was given up for dead a year ago, and staged an unbelievable comeback. Believe.

Second, McCain is a "conservative," but he appears more and more to be a "western" conservative instead of a bluenosed right-winger. The westerners are different. Maybe that's why he took a look at Palin's vetting and said "Let's go."

Finally the fighter pilot. I know, I know. Some people think I emphasize the fighter pilot angle too much. They don't know fighter pilots. I do. I was supposed to be one until I jumped out of the cockpit. Creeping and crawling is my thing. Cloak and dagger, not .20 mike-mikes and napes.

Fighter pilots are risk-takers. They are tough. They are incredibly flexible and reactive. And they want to attack, not defend. They are the ultimate proponents of the truism "the best defense is a good offense."

Finally, McCain is tolerant. Surprise, surprise. (I knew it; fighter jocks are almost always tolerant.)

The left-wing bluenose media have made a big megillah of Sarah Palin's prospective son-in-law and "the baby." NBC news reports the "redneck" is en route to St. Paul. It's pretty hard to start a fight, or criticize the good governor, if they are able to assemble as one big happy. Hey, that's Alaska.

Ordinary working people will not be offended by the Palin drama; those kinds of challenges are part of their daily grind. And the Palins did tell their future son-in-law, "Get to work, redneck, you got a kid on the way to support." (I see the shotgun in the background.) So what's the big deal?

I have often wondered what life would have been like if I had married my girl friend at 19. Now I'll have something to think about and reflect on. It's hard not to see yourself and insert your own life's experiences in the saga of a family making their way through life. We cope in different ways.

And now for the big megillah, the real megillah. Senator Joe Lieberman. Politicians love to describe other officials as "my friend." (McCain does that too; we are all his "friends.") I have forgotten how many people referred to McCain as a friend at the DNC in Denver, and then shanked him. Some friends.

But Joe Lieberman is a friend indeed. He has staked out his position next to McCain and stood his ground. On foreign policy, Lieberman will be the de facto vice president, "McCain's Joe Biden."

Jewish voters are traditional Democrats. And they still are. Nevertheless, there is a significant minority of the Jewish community that looks to Lieberman for leadership. He is providing the guidance. Lieberman is someone who celebrates the Sabbath, and appears to live a modest life. I am not aware of large investments or other extravagant detritus from a lifetime spent in politics. He was the Democrats' candidate for vice president eight years ago. He is as much of a maverick in his own way as John McCain. And these two men appear to be real friends.

Now let me say that I don’t agree with McCain's announced Middle East policies. I think the last eight years have been a disaster for American foreign policy. But policies and political promises are just pieces of paper. Reality will intrude on inauguration day. I feel confident that McCain and Lieberman are decent men who will do what they think is right.

Some people criticize me for believing McCain is the real "peace candidate," but that is what I feel. McCain supports the disastrous invasion of Iraq. But had he been president I do not believe he would have approved it. Where you stand depends on where you sit.

Obama says he is eager to have a foreign policy debate with McCain. Make that Lieberman and McCain. They will be a team. I can’t believe that a significant portion of the Jewish community won’t vote for a man who enjoys the confidence of Joe Lieberman.

No, this is not your father's GOP.

Fasten your seat belts. And pass the Pablum.

Martin is the author of "Obama: The Man Behind the Mask."

"I want to make the accusation loudly and clearly: Barack Obama has the most sophisticated 'dirty tricks' operation in American political history. His smear artists make Nixon's 'plumbers' look like amateurs. David Axelrod's smear machine is part and parcel of the way he does business. This smear machine was behind the desperate attempts to demonize Governor Sarah Palin by embarrassing and exposing her daughter.

"Obama also likes to provide plausible deniability by protesting 'too much' that something is 'off limits' when he knows that all while his smear operation is in progress. Anonymously. Why this man wants to abolish anonymity on the Internet puzzles me. He is the most pronounced anonymous smear agent on the Internet.

"Obama's fingerprints and Axelrod's fingerprints are all over the Palin smear.

"Wednesday we will have a more detailed analysis of the pervasiveness of Obama's smear and dirty tricks operations.

"But today I am blowing the whistle on the mysterious Barry Obama, and alerting the American people to the threat Obama poses to our democracy.

"During the Army McCarthy hearings in 1954, attorney Joseph Welch uttered the eternal words: 'Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty, or your recklessness…Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?'

"Obama's own teenage mother was caught in an unwanted and unwarranted pregnancy.

"Instead of being especially sensitive to such a situation, Obama unleashed his attack dogs on the Palin family. It is one of the most disgraceful performances I have witnesses in a half century of observing politics. At long last, Senator Obama, have you no sense of decency? You know what your dirty tricks operatives are doing, your 'Obamabots.' You, sir, are a threat to both American democracy and American decency.

"John McCain once said he would rather lose an election than lose a war. You would rather risk destroying a helpless teenage girl to further your mindless and limitless ambition.

"You launched your poisonous attacks. Now you want to pretend you had nothing to do with the smears. Well they did happen, and you are personally responsible for the Obama/Axelrod dirty tricks operation. You have been demonizing and smearing opponents since your first run for office.

"I saw you smear Blair Hull and Jack Ryan four years ago. I saw you try the same dirty trick against John McCain a few weeks ago. The latest mud is nothing new. This is the real Obama, the only Obama."

Andy Martin was a guest on the WABC-AM "Bob Grant Show" Monday evening. During the show, Grant told his audience "Buy this book." "I was surprised at how well-prepared Bob was," Martin stated. "He was familiar with my book. He 'got it.' Like me, Grant is an Illini. He gets Obama because he understands Illinois politics. I am sure the Obamabots will be attacking Grant the same way they attacked Milt Rosenberg in Chicago."

Andy will be at the Reuters Building in midtown Manhattan Tuesday morning at 10:00 A.M. for an Al-Jazeera English taping on American politics. His Obama news conference will follow at 12 noon.

PART ONE: GOD BLESS THE USA

Labor Day is the last weekend of summer. Schools in the north begin later this week. Beach houses are closed. Summer clothes are laundered and saved for next year. It is a quiet holiday, named in honor of American's labor movement and "working class."

But there is something about the USA that defies comprehension. Few people consider themselves "laborers." A few do, and they do labor. But most people do not consider themselves "working class" or similar terms used in Europe. Despite his madcap campaign for the presidency in 1992, Ross Perot spoke one unassailable truth: in America, we all consider ourselves "owners." We all have an ownership stake in our financial future. Large or small, we are owners, not servants to royalty. In the words of the poet Robert Frost, "it has made all the difference." The American Dream endures.

While we do indeed have a small aristocracy, families who have maintained decades of inherited wealth and can place some claim to an enduring social presence, in reality they are no different than the rest of us. The last redoubt of "aristocracy" is Newport, Rhode Island, and it can be a boring place. I have met some of our aristocrats. Thanks but no thanks.

Miracle of miracles, the American experiment, of the people, by the people continues to define us.

Our presidential campaign is being waged among four ordinary Americans from four ordinary families. Barack Obama is not my cup of tea, but you cannot help but salute and admire the way he has parlayed his mediocre legal career into a mansion and millions of dollars, as well as undreamed of political prominence, with more cash on the way.

Barack Obama's attacks on John McCain's homes fell flat. Why? In America everyone aspires to be wealthy. Why knock a guy who was lucky enough to succeed?

Joe Biden. Some columnists have suggested Joe is not as working class as he enjoys endlessly reminding us, but whatever the truth (and it appears he was middle class in origins; Joe just loves to fib) he is also no one who inherited wealth or social prominence. Two ordinary men who by the dint of hard work, self-confidence and self-promotion have come to lead one of our two great political parties.

On the Republican side, more ordinary people. One of the more goofy remarks I have seen recently is one by Rich Lowry in the New York Post, claiming McCain is part of an "elite—removed from middle class life—in McCain's case the aristocracy of the Navy." http://www.nypost.com/seven/08302008/postopinion/opedcolumnists/the_real_thing_126711.htmWhat?

Military people have never been well-paid or considered "aristocrats." They may have enjoyed a comfortable duty station (Panama, where McCain was born, or Hawaii) but Navy people are ordinary people. Dare I say "salt of the earth?" Where Lowry gets his misconception that McCain is part of an aristocracy or elite beats me. Did Lowry not see the movie "Top Gun?" No aristocrats, they. McCain was a public servant that lived off his paycheck; his father and grandfather were the same. Public servants, not aristocrats.

Sarah Palin? It's hard to be more ordinary. And yet, she and her husband made their way in life, paying the bills and, through her talents, advancing to national office? God bless the USA.

Not only are the four candidates ordinary, despite what their detractors say about them, we will sleep easily on November 5th. Congress is also made up of pretty ordinary people. Few aristocrats there either.

Look at poor Russia, by comparison. Run by a crazed secret policeman who has unleashed a reign of terror in Russia, with murders, invasions and, ultimately, a Hitleresque self-destruction some time in the future. Who dreamed him up? I feel sorry for the Russians.

With all of our flaws and foibles, Americans have managed to continue to run ourselves, and to allow ourselves to be run by ordinary people. Hillary Clinton, good midwestern stock. She stayed in the "bubble" a little too long, and flew too close to the sun. She was punished for it. Obama's new "grande bubble?" He will pay the price too. George Bush did. McCain resisted a Secret Service bubble. No aristocrat he. A common man. In a Navy uniform.

I have just been to a barbecue. After this column, time for a nap. Hey, it's Labor Day. God Bless the USA. Still the home of the common man, and woman.

PART TWO: TEEN PREGNANCY, SHOTGUN WEDDINGS AND THE SECOND AMENDMENT

My respect and admiration for John McCain just goes up and up. He is truly growing into an even wiser leader than I thought possible. I have been critical of some of his peccadilloes in the past. No one is perfect. I happen to know of McCain pretty well. But he continues to surprise me with his common sense, maturity and sound judgment.

His handling of the hurricane has been understated, and masterful. And now, teen pregnancy? What's next? Locusts? What liberal Cyclops or Circe lie ahead?

I have been saying for the past few weeks that in order to win, McCain needed a woman on the ticket. No, I did not think of Governor Palin; but any woman would do in my opinion. McCain chose Palin. On reflection, she seems to be an excellent choice. She has the left-wing cable TV bobbleheads in a tizzy, and probably the rightists too.

Today we learned Palin's young daughter has been "messing around," and made a mess. McCain, we are told, knew this when he nominated Palin. Good for him. He knew what he wanted and needed, and he went for it, probably with no concern for any remarks by blue-nosed critics.

One of the things that I always find amusing about the ultra-moralists in the Republican Party is—surprise---they end up with the same challenges as any other families. Unwanted pregnancies, gays, divorce and (unspeakably more).

First we had a Democratic candidate who was the product of a mindless liaison between a troubled teenager, Obama's mother, and The Lion King Obama of Africa. Barack Obama is with us today because his mother was a pro-lifer who had the baby and took the consequences. Good for her.

Now we have a Republican candidate's daughter heading for a shotgun wedding. My guess, here is how the Palin family handled what happened. Mom (Sarah): This is a job for you, First Dude. FD, you know what to do. Dad (Todd): Ok, I'll call the other family and work it out. We'll deal with it.

Actually, the Palins handled this unfortunate incident the old fashioned way. And the old-fashioned way worked well. Parents took responsibility for their hormonally challenged children, and no one thought of running to the welfare office for food stamps, free medical care or public housing, the way many people do today. What would happen if we closed the welfare offices in minority neighborhoods and made parents responsible? Life would soon return to "middle class" normal, the way it was before welfare. People would take responsibility for their children.

If we again made families responsible, we would have fewer "accidents," and society would not have to worry about footing the bill for the accidents that took place. Three cheers for the Palins.

And a great cheer for John McCain, who took it all in stride. As long as John McCain is our First Dude in the White House, and keeps this nation safe "from all enemies foreign and domestic," I will be happy to let parents be responsible for their wayward teenagers. Shotguns, anyone? On second thought, I better be careful. Some liberal wacko like Rachel Maddow might claim that shotgun weddings are not protected by the Second Amendment.

OBAMA SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANTI-PALIN SMEARS

(NEW YORK, NY)(REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION)(September 1, 2008) Barack Obama denies that his "smear machine" (a "Schmear-macht" in New York? How cheesy.) is behind left-wing blogger smears on Governor Sarah Palin.

Make no mistake: The Obama smear machine is real. His campaign manger David Axelrod is one of the greatest smear artists in the history of modern American politics.

Obama smears anyone and everyone who crosses his path. Smears are an essential part of the Obama campaign. Several weeks ago, Axelrod floated the first smears about John McCain. Look for more of the same.

Me? I have been smeared by Obama for over a year.

One of Obama's favorite tactics is to use the mad billionaire George Soros as his "front." Soros in turns farms out his malignant propaganda operation to tax-exempt organizations that sling the ----. Obama has tried to smear me using disputes in a quarter-century old lawsuit. For the record, both as a public interest advocate and private litigant I have been involved in a lot of lawsuits, and I have won landmark public interest cases, as well as using litigation to expose and embarrass corrupt judges, see Andymartin.com for details. Obama has never apologized to me for his dirty tricks operation against me.

None of Obama's smears against me have any anything remotely to do with the facts I have exposed about his sordid history in the sewers of Chicago politics.

Did the anti-Palin "baby" smears originate with Obama? Indeed they did. Obama is lying through his teeth when he denies responsibility for attacking Governor Palin's teenaged daughter and, through her, her mother.

This time Obama's smears appears to have backfired. And he knows it.

Anonymous smears that cannot be sourced to the Obama campaign have, sadly, become an integral part of his political operation. That's the way they do things in Chicago. They are a standard part of any David Axelrod operation. Obama also uses left-wing toadies in the media, such as Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow of MSNBC, Alan Colmes of Fox news and Chris Hayes of the Nation, to crank up the noise level of the smear machine.

Obama is also a master of disinformation. He produced an anonymous "genius" that claimed to have "researched" the origins of "Muslim smears" against him. The Washington Post's "investigation" pointed at me, but could find no evidence I had done anything wrong. I had not. Nevertheless, the Post saw fit to publish a nearly full-page story on the "investigation" by Danielle Allen although she too was using tax-exempt facilities to conduct her "research."

After I directed pointed questions at Allen, she disappeared and has not been heard from since. The Washington Post has not apologized to me for being duped by Obama. I continue to write the truth, and carefully fact-check, my claims about Obama.

AS OBAMA'S SPEECH AT THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION FADES INTO MEMORY, SOME OF HIS REMARKS BEAR REMEMBERING.

(NEW YORK, NY)(DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION)(September 1, 2008) How many years ago was Senator Barack Obama's acceptance speech to the Democratic National Convention (DNC)? It seems ancient. Within hours, Obama's pallid remarks were eclipsed by Senator John McCain's bold tactics. Now Hurricane Gustav is temporarily eclipsing everything. I'm back in New York, and three things from Obama's DNC speech left a lasting impression on me.

THE DOG THAT BARKED, NUMBER ONE: I began writing about Obama's troubled psyche four years ago. I was fascinated with his relentless efforts to create a "fantasy family." He's still at it. In Denver Obama again pretended that his mother and father had some "plan" based on "America" that led to their becoming his parents. They had nothing of the sort.

His mother was a troubled teenager who probably disregarded warnings and became pregnant by an already-married African huckster. They had no "plans" at all. In fact, Barack Obama, Senior disentangled himself from his second "wife" at his first opportunity. Despite the fact that Barack Junior was the product of an embarrassingly casual liaison, he continues to pretend that his parents embarked on a grand "plan" when they created him. On the contrary, he should be a poster boy for unwanted pregnancies. His mother was several months pregnant when she allegedly "married" her first husband, Obama's father.

Despite the unpleasant reality, Obama continues to spin his family fantasies. Why do I focus on this point? It isn't because of the pain inflicted on "Barry" Obama by his parents. I have no desire to cause him any further injury. There has been hurt enough in his life. Rather, I continue to be fascinated by Obama's inability to deal with the truth about his conception. Obama's mother, who could have terminated the pregnancy, had the baby. Maybe she was a pro-lifer, unlike her son. She had the unwanted child. (Pro-lifers would say that every child is "wanted," but I am not going to argue that point now.)

Nevertheless, a man who continues to manifest an inability to deal with his family history is a man who continues to be a prisoner of his own childhood frustrations and fantasies. That's dangerous in any politician; it could be fatal in a president. The power of fabrication still controls his psyche. Over and over again Obama peddles his family fantasies to the American public. It is scary. I just don’t feel comfortable with a man in the Oval Office who can’t face reality and start by facing his own reality. Dangerous.

THE DOG THAT BARKED, NUMBER TWO: One of the slurs on Obama is that he is an "elitist." Well, in his own life, he can afford to be. He began life as a mediocre lawyer and through skillful management of his political career he has become a multimillionaire. I predict even more millions will find their way into his pocket once he is defeated for the White House. Corporations will pay him well, very well, for his services. Obama may not be a great leader, but he is the world's greatest entertainer.

But just as Obama slipped in San Francisco, by making snide remarks about small town residents who cling to guns, religion and prejudice, he slipped again in his DNC speech. He said a "big election" could not be about "small issues." This from a man whose party made school uniforms a reelection issue in 1996.

Obama is an elitist because his "small issues" indeed loom very large in the minds of many voters. Where he really stands on faith matters is of concern to many voters, including Roman Catholics.

Where he stands on the Second Amendment deserves greater specification than his contrapuntal examples of urban violence and hunting. What about the right to bear arms in the home to defend against urban violence? African-Americans today are under siege from other African-Americans. Helpless children are murdered by stray bullets almost every day in Chicago.

Whites are not part of the problem; white police are often the only solution to this intra-racial gun violence. Should Blacks be denied the right to defend their homes? With a gun? Or does the Second Amendment stop at the forest's edge? Obama won't say. That's a "big" issue, even if he doesn't think so. I could go on, but you get the point. What are "small" matters to Obama are "big" issues to most Americans. Elitist.

THE DOG THAT DIDN'T BARK, NUMBER ONE: In case Obama only reads or listens to his left-wing echo chamber at MSNBC (sorry, Keith), I begin this comment with a link to MSNBC:

There you have it: reality compels the conclusion we are indeed in a new Cold War. But foreign policy was a curiously absent topic in Obama's DNC speech. How will Obama deal with the new Cold War? Talk? Action? Indifference? We don’t have a clue. Obama's only foreign policy focus was to call Senator John McCain a coward and declare that McCain was afraid to go to Osama Bin Laden's "cave." (How does Obama know where Bin Laden lives, and that it is a "cave?") The last I checked McCain was a senator, not president or SecDef. In other words, Obama made a joke of the foreign policy crisis confronting every American. The war on terror. Big issue, small response.

I am a Republican, because Republicans preach about less government and less spending. (They lie too.) I am also a Republican because over the past half century, Republican foreign policy has generally kept the peace, with one notable catastrophe (Iraq, which I opposed). For me, foreign policy is almost everything. The standard of living we enjoy is a direct result of freedom—and foreign trade. The shipping lanes must be open. There must be peace in the world. And we must bring enduring conflicts such as the Israeli/Palestinian imbroglio, to an end.

We are told that Obama "wrote his (DNC) speech." If so, the speech is an insight into the man, and it is not a particularly flattering insight. Obama doesn't care about foreign policy, and probably doesn't understand it. He has a hyper-intellectualized approach to the rest of the world. That's why he was so popular in the law school faculty lounge.

"Let's talk" doesn't work in the real world. You can't just sit down and speak with savages like Vladimir Putin, who is murdering innocent civilians in Georgia and his own people within Russia.

If Obama had asked me, I would have told him to attack McCain on his strong point. To do a "McCain on McCain." "Don't sweat the small stuff, Barry," I would have said. "Attack Johnny Mac on foreign policy. Show how you can do a better job." By his silence Obama forfeited foreign policy to McCain. Obama the bold? Or Obama the scold? You be the judge.

All in all, a very forgettable speech. On second thought, maybe left-wing wacko Michael Moore is right. There is a God. Maybe God took pity on Barack Obama, and sent a hurricane so people would quickly forget his pathetic acceptance speech.

Now you know why I am a Republican. And why I make fun of the cable TV bobbleheads, who usually do not have a clue what is going on in the real world. But then again, neither does Obama. Rachel Maddow and Barry Obama. Perfect together.

Make mine "McCain."
