National corruption fighter and “Fighting Illini” Andy Martin will hold a Chicago news conference today, Wednesday, September 2nd to announce his support for the University of Illinois football team and its players. “The U of I football program is going through a difficult patch,” Andy says. “And it is at times such as these that those of us who are committed to being ‘Illini for Life’ must stand up and be counted in support of the team and the players. I have no role and want no role in the investigation and attendant controversy. That is for others to resolve. But I was a tiny mustard seed of a participant in the football program at one of the greatest moments in Fighting Illini history; the lessons learned stayed with me to provide wisdom and insight during my life. I hope that everyone who has ever worn an Illinois football jersey will stand up and be counted in support of the team. The young men who are in the program today need our unhesitating and unconditional support. They need the benefit of our wisdom, judgment and most of all our continuity. I am very proud to extend that encouragement as we begin a new season under challenging conditions. This month and next I will be taking some time off from my political activity to show my support for the current generation of ‘Men of Illinois.’ I know my surviving coaches will be delighted to see that the years have not dimmed my Fighting Illini spirit or my willingness to stand up and be counted. Go Illini.”

(Chicago) (September 2, 2015) Andy Martin, probably the only Edmund J. James Scholar at the University of Illinois to participate in the Illinois football program, will hold a Chicago news conference Wednesday, September 2nd to express his “unhesitating and unconditional” support for the University of Illinois football team and its players.

“The University of Illinois is mired in a challenging situation involving its football team,” Andy says. (link below) “I don’t know anything more about the matter than what I read in the emails I receive from the AD. Unlike the Phyllis Wise university scandal, where I took the lead in fighting against Wise’s misconduct, I have no intention of taking any role in the football investigation. The situation seems to be well in hand. I do, however, want to express my unconditional and unhesitating support for the football team and its players, and my willingness to help and encourage the players in any way possible.

“I joined the football program at a time when it was led by young men who would go on to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. My own talents were considerably more modest. But my coaches recognized in me the ‘Fighting Illini’ spirit and with their encouragement and affection I took away much more from the program than I will ever be able to repay. That is why I am proud to be an ‘Illini for Life.’

“My first year at Illinois the team won the Big Ten Championship and the Rose Bowl. It was an experience I will never forget. I also injured my shoulder. My roommate and I were an odd couple. He was an African-American from Centralia, a third-year player. I came to Illinois with a New England background. But even though he didn’t get to play much on the championship team, which was overloaded with potential All-Americans, he was a leader and through him I had a ringside seat as we swept to victory.

“Retired coach Ray Eliot would meet the new freshman and impress upon us that we were the ‘Men of Illinois.’ How could anyone forget? Coach Pete Elliott was one of the greatest recruiters and managers I have ever seen. My freshman coaches were a diverse bunch.

“Over the decades, Illinois football has had its ups and downs. But I have remained loyal, and will be there again next month at Memorial Stadium to cheer on the team. I encourage every Fighting Illini supporter to do the same. Now is when we are needed. Decades later, we are still the ‘Men of Illinois.’”
