(CHICAGO, IL) (October 22, 2014)  “Monday morning I attempted to post a comment on the capitolfax.com web site raising questions about the “McKinney incident” Andy says. “I am clearly not a supporter of Bruce Rauner and I have never been a critic of Dave McKinney. I bear neither man any personal animus.

“My comment was innocuous. Here it is in its entirety:

I am certainly no fan of Bruce Rauner but it seems to me the McKinney story is more serious than it appears on first blush. The claim that Dave McKinney’s wife is not doing consulting in Illinois but that her firm is advising clients in Illinois is legally a distinction without a difference. It was not until I saw your story that I realized how big the amount of McKinney-related fees was. Maybe I have now graduated to the status of “old fashioned” but, if asked, I would have suggested the Sun-times disclose the potential conflict and avoid the controversy. The fact that Quinn may have been polling on the story before it was published also raises the question of whether there was a leak.

Illinois politics has long been tainted by family-related conflicts of interest. The fact that Dick Durbin’s wife is a Washington lobbyist has always raised legitimate questions in my mind. Durbin also denies any conflict. Bruce had a right to fight back on this one. There is an “appearance’ of a conflict that can leave a reasonable person uncomfortable. Because Rauner’s campaign team is inexperienced he has not handled the defense as well as he should have.

“Rich Miller removed my comment in an obvious attempt to skew his web site against Rauner. Mr. Miller has every right to censor his web site to present a pro-Democratic Party point of view. He does not have the right to masquerade as an impartial and professional journalist while acting as a hit man for Illinois Democrats.

“The issue of ‘conflicts’ posed by the modern age, in which people in the media, politics and public relations intermarry, is a subject worthy of serious consideration and debate. On the facts of Mr. Rauner’s incident I thought Bruce had a reasonable proposition to present. Rich Miller was obviously trying to act like a hick politician instead of a respectable journalist.

“The standard we use in the law is ‘what would a reasonable person think of the facts?’

“The recent appearance of ‘lobbyist’ spouses in Washington, such as Mrs. Dick Durbin, adds to the public belief that wives now serve as ‘bagmen’ for politicians and that ‘Washington’ always finds a way around any ethical restrictions which are adopted. The ‘McKinney incident’ feeds into the same narrative. The Sun-Times has every right to defend their employee, even if the undisputed facts fly in the face of the ‘reasonable person’ standard of behavior.

“I believe a reasonable person would believe that Dave McKinney, because of the huge amount of work his wife’s firm was doing in the current election, had an actual conflict of interest. McKinney’s wife has to benefit from the $600,000 or whatever amount her firm has billed. To pretend that in a small, closely-owned company a $600,000 account would not create some sort of benefit for even a partner supposedly ‘walled-off’ from working on the account is an insult to the intelligence.

“Mr. Miller has his stable of sycophants who he allows to post the most inane remarks on a daily basis. He is obviously not interested in reasonably impartial analysis of a serious situation. Particularly because I am not a supporter of Mr. Rauner, my belief that Rauner’s complaints had arguable merit was entitled to be presented along with Miller’ sycophants’ comments.

“People should be aware Miller is not a journalist; he has the same kind of conflict that Bruce Rauner raised in relation to Dave McKinney,” Andy says.

Andy Martin writes on the death of film critic Roger Ebert and an era of Chicago journalism that probably died with Ebert



(CHICAGO) (April 5, 2013)



I set eyes on the City of Chicago for the first time fifty years ago. A half a century ago? It doesn’t seem possible so much time has passed. But time has passed, and with the passage of time Chicago journalism has changed as well. An era may have also passed with Roger Ebert.



Chicago was love at first sight for me. I was captivated by what the poet Carl Sandberg called the “City of the Big Shoulders.”



I had grown up in New England, from New Hampshire to Connecticut, and went to Illinois with the possibility that I could play football at the University of Illinois (“U of I”). I visited Chicago during Thanksgiving vacation.



Chicago had a long history of a vibrant and sometimes outrageous media environment. The Chicago cauldron was later stirred by Paul Zimbrakos at the City News Bureau (“If your mother says she loves you, check it out.”)(please see link #1 below).



The mighty Chicago Tribune owned “Chicagoland,” with one irritating exception. A scrappy tabloid, The Chicago Sun-Times, started by Marshall Field III, and carried on by his son Marshall Field IV (please see link #2) remained a liberal, independent voice in Chicago. The Field family fortune (“Field Enterprises”) was used to cover the Sun-Times’ losses. (Field also owned the legendary Chicago Daily News.) The cut-throat competition between the Sun-Times and Tribune continues to this day, although both papers are mere shadows of their former 1960’s selves.



But I get ahead of my story. I am not going to write about Roger Ebert the film critic. You already have scads of stories about that. I am going to write about the passing of Roger Ebert the newspaperman.



If one man is responsible for Chicago still being a two-newspaper town in 2013, that man is Roger Ebert.



Roger Ebert was editor of the Daily Illini (“DI”) my freshman year at the U of I. I never had any interest in being a student journalist although I later wrote a series of columns for the DI. But when I first met Roger and saw him in the old basement newsroom of the DI I was fascinated by his regal demeanor. He generated a “presence.” Roger was a “townie;” despite my New England origins I was a sort-of-townie because my mother was on the college faculty. I lived in the football dorm.



Ebert was an extraordinary editor and a very impressive student and I paid attention to his comings and goings where we occasionally intersected. Roger and I were never friends but I ran into him from time to time at licensed premises.



Eventually I became close with writers at the Chicago Daily News, and became a small part of a team that exposed corruption on the Illinois Supreme Court. One of my acquaintances from the U of I ended up at the Sun-Times. He became my eyes within Field Enterprises (I also did business with Field Enterprises as a broadcaster.)



From the late 1960’s to the mid-1980’s I was a regular visitor to the Sun-Times and Daily news newsrooms (The Daily News folded in 1977). Ebert had become a commanding presence at the Sun-Times. But Roger was much more than merely a film critic. He was the bedrock on which the Sun-Times continued to survive. The newspapers’ losses did not sit well with Field Enterprises executives even as Marshall Field V took control. Field V had a half brother in Alaska, Ted. Ted Field had little emotional connection to his sibling or to Chicago itself. Eventually Field Enterprises was sold off, wound up and divided among the heirs.



But Ebert endured at the Sun-Times. He was the “franchise” employee whose growing fame gave the newspaper a claim to survival.



The demimonde of newspaper writers hung out at Ricardo’s across from the old Sun-Times building (now the Trump Tower). The Billy Goat Tavern was also a popular watering hole, made famous by Daily-News-then-Sun-Times columnist Mike Royko. And for dead-enders there was O’Rourke’s on North Avenue, another bar with a media following.



Because I moved in with a woman I never acquired the habit of hanging out at Ricardo’s, the Billy Goat, or O’Rourke’s, although I lived a few blocks away. I was only an occasional visitor. I had friends that were there “regularly” and they kept me up to date on Ebert and others until Roger later left the scene.



Strangely, I can remember Mike Royko’s cubicle in the corner of the Sun-Times newsroom (after 1977). But while I remember seeing Ebert’s space I don’t remember where it was. Irv Kupcinet, also a Chicago mainstay, had an office and secretary a floor about the newsroom. I saw Ebert moving around. (After the Daily News folded the editors had merged the two newsrooms.)



Ebert and I continued to occasionally bump into each other and I found him a fascinating personality – writer, drinker, critic – until he married and adopted a more sedate lifestyle.



As I said, after Ted Field came of age Ted demanded the dismantlement of Field Enterprises. The Sun-Times lost its wealthy parent. Over the years the Sun-Times was purchased by other media organizations and today remains a stand-alone paper (that is now printed by the Chicago Tribune). Both the Tribune and Sun-Times have gone through bankruptcy.



The Chicago media world that existed from the mid-1960’s to the early 1990’s is no more. Death and retirement have claimed just about everyone. And Thursday, death claimed Roger Ebert.



I always found Roger an extraordinary character. For anyone to spend 46 years with any organization is unbelievable in the modern world. Although I knew Ebert had an excellent financial arrangement with the Sun-Times the Tribune would have lured him away in a Chicago Minute, as it eventually did Mike Royko. But Ebert stayed with the Sun-Times, and the Sun-Times survived in large part through Roger’s star power and loyalty.



The University of Illinois is spread across two small towns, Champaign and Urbana. Urbana is the smaller and homier of the two. My first house off campus was in downtown Urbana, where Ebert had grown up. He loved the Princess theater, and I went there with my girl friend at the time. I got to know Urbana well during my undergraduate studies and law school, from the Kroger supermarket to the News-Gazette bureau.



To understand Ebert all you have to do is know Urbana. Roger was a small-town guy with his name in lights in Hollywood but his values still anchored in Urbana. Ebert may have gone to Hollywood but he does not appear to have “gone Hollywood.”



Roger Ebert was a world-class celebrity, but he was still rooted in Urbana, at the DI and in the values of loyalty and consistency that kept him at the Sun-Times for 46 years. In my opinion, he kept the paper alive.



An era in Chicago journalism died with Roger Ebert.



RIP, Roger.

Andy Martin ran broadcast advertising across the state of Illinois this past January exposing Kirk’s military frauds. Kirk lied when he said he was in Afghanistan in January ‘fighting for [Andy Martin’s] rights.’ Mark Kirk has a mental disturbance,” Martin says. “Mark Kirk’s political career is over. He is a closeted gay man that systematically and deliberately lied to Republican primary voters, and was supported by a Chicago media conspiracy of silence.

(CHICAGO)(June 4, 2010) Chicago crime fighter and anti-corruption crusader Andy Martin will hold a Palm Beach news conference today, Friday, June 4th to claim credit for ending the political career of military imposter/closeted homosexual Mark Kirk.

“Much as the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times hate to admit it, I took down Mark Kirk,” Martin will state. “Alexi Giannoulias' campaign used my campaign advertising and research as a starting point, and followed through with their own research. I provided the pointers on both Kirk's sexual misrepresentations and on his inflated military career. I filed a DADT complaint against Kirk. It's all out there on my blogs. Kirk can read it and weep.

“I beat the newspapers at their own game, by telling the truth about Kirk while they were lying to their readers. Lynn Sweet, the Sun-Times hack who appears on MSNBC, was a cheerleader for Kirk; she’s now exposed as a complete loser. Kirk had the temerity to tell the bogus Chicago media at the Union League Club in January that he was in Afghanistan ‘fighting for Andy Martin’s rights:’

Martin created a media firestorm as Chicago media tried to demonize Martin for telling the truth about Kirk in Martin’s radio ads. Martin also documented his claims of military fraud concerning Kirk by posting documents on Martin’s own anti-Kirk web site [www.MarkKirk.us] showing Kirk had never served in Afghanistan.

“For forty-four years I have been fighting political corruption in Chicago and Illinois politics. The only thanks I have received is a continuing smack in the face from the media. Chicago media have lived a lie for the past half century. Media lies keep crooked Illinois politicians in power. Rick Pearson, a creepy writer at the Chicago Tribune, is a Kirk sycophant. Pearson is now disgraced and exposed for his own corruption.

“I have always worked to find the facts, and searched for the truth, and I did so during the 2009-2010 primary election. But when the truth and facts hit Chicago’s airwaves on December 28th, once again media attacked me for exposing Mark Kirk as one of the greatest frauds in American political history. So far, local media have barely played ‘catch-up’ and only scratched the tip of the iceberg of Kirk’s military fraud. Kirk is 100 times worse than Connecticut’s Richard Blumenthal. Blumenthal lied a few times. Kirk lied about his entire career, for over a decade, over and over again, in his congressional materials, his campaign materials, everywhere and in every aspect of his public career.

“When my senate campaign started broadcasting the facts on December 28th, Chicago’s media morons responded by attacking me for telling the truth about Mark Kirk. What losers. If ever there was an ‘I told you so’ moment in American politics, this is it. I warned Republican voters that they were going to destroy the party if they voted for Kirk, but no one wanted to hear the truth. Well, we have more and more and more ‘truth’ about Mark Kirk to come.

“It’s just beginning.

“Kirk’s military fraud and homosexuality are now jeopardizing the entire statewide and local Illinois Republican ticket. I’ll have more to say about that very shortly.

”Ironically, Channel 7 WLS-TV devoted virtually an entire 90-minute broadcast debate in January to allowing its ‘journalists’ to trash me for running ads telling the truth about Kirk. Channel 7's Andy Shaw and Charles Thomas also owe me an apology. I have a copy of the tape. This is one of the greatest media scandals, and media embarrassments, in recent American media history. The truth was out there in the open, and Chicago media attacked the truth and attacked the truth-teller. Is it any wonder the state of Illinois is dying? That ordinary Illinoisans feel betrayed? In Illinois, the media are as crooked as the politicians.

“Ironically, the only one who paid any attention to me was Alexi Giannoulias. His people were quietly observing my campaign from a distance and taking down everything I disclosed about Kirk. Alexi’s people then did their own additional research and verified the truth of my allegations.

“There is a lesson here for Republicans: pay attention to the truth and the facts. Don’t sweep a candidate’s lies under the carpet and expect to get away with it.
